CES: Sony Aibo 2018

NumLock21

Sony's robotic dog Aibo has made its return to this years CES and now it's looks even more realistic. The new AIBO features eyes made of OLED. There are 2 cameras, its nose and one near its tail. The nose cam is used for detecting its owner, family members, and other people. The camera on the back is for scanning its surrounding area, so they know where they are. Aibo has 3 areas that will make it respond to your touch, its head, under the chin, and back. When touching those areas, Aibo will show a wide range of movements, a lot more than it's predecessor. It's powered by a quad core processor and it also has 4G LTE, as well as WiFi.

Quote

Multiple touch-sensitive zones on Aibo's back, front and head ensured the robot visibly reacted to the Sony-approved robodog handlers, but I'm more interested to see how the robot dog behaves once it learns to differentiate between owners. According to Sony spokesman, your Aibo will begin to learn which humans give the best snuggles, or at least whoever pets it the most.

The dog understood a handful of English-language directions, including hand-shaking and commands to sit. The revived Aibo has cute, glassy OLED eyes and a camera inside its nose, which can act as a webcam for your home when you're away. The robopup contains a quad-core CPU, built-in LTE and WiFi, as well as motors and gyroscopes to augment the 22 different articulated parts. It has speaker for robotic yips and yaps and four microphones to pick up voice commands -- something it was capable of doing despite the noise of a packed Sony press event.

For now, Aibo is only available in Japan for 170,000 yen, that's almost $1,800 USD. At $1,800 it is expensive, but buyers will also need to pay a subscription for Aibo's cloud connected services. It's about $27 per month or a 3 year subscription can be purchased upfront for $790 usd. Aibo will start shipping Jan 11, 2018.

The community around the remaining Aibo's is INSANE. There is almost no price they wouldn't pay to repair them.

I remember when the first Aibo launched back in the day. It was pretty damn impressive how much robot technology they could put into a small consumer electronics device. Well, a lot of time has passed since then, and the internet has... "developed". I wonder how long it takes someone from 4chan to buy this an install a fleshlight. :|

Watching Intel have competition is like watching a headless chicken trying to get out of a mine field

You don’t have to pick up it’s crap or feed it.

9/10 add fur and a heater to it and I’ll give 11/10.

For those who have a allergic reaction and places where real pets aren't allowed.

i wouldn't mind having this one as an alternate to having a real dog, less annoying noise,no poop, no smell, no irritating behavior , it's like everything that a dog couldn't do.

Details separate people.

$1,800 is alot but looking at real puppy prices(in Sweden) it's around the same prices. And real puppies don't have wifi!

first off, the previous ones look so bad its laughable, but this one while better isnt great either. robot pets are a neat idea but kinda takes away from what i see the point of haveing one beyond they are cute which is haveing something you need to take care off so you have a reason to get your shit together

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I bought one of the 2nd generation ones, ERS-210 I think it was. Cheaper than 1st gen, but not cheap by any means, think it was around £1200 ball park at the time. Still got mine in storage case but she's got droopy head syndrome and the jitters, quite likely the batteries are past their best by now too. Don't know if there are any "vets" still around that can repair those, and I'm not motivated enough to do a DIY repair.

Why?... why not? It's another gadget toy. I even went to owner meetups where there were random events like racing them.

Basically, no dog. I guess it's a way for people who don't want a dog to own a "dog" because they'd feel weird petting the back of their smartphone or something.

Then again, toys are toys, and to each its own. The real red light to me is the $27 a month of glorious IoT bullshit.
