YouTube plans to launch its own music streaming service

mankeez

YouTube is planning to launch it's own music streaming service called "Remix". They have signed a deal with Sony and Universal Music Group to kickstart it. This wouldn't be the first time Alphabet (YouTube and Google's parent company) tries to enter the music industry. In fact, it would actually be the THIRD time they try (Third time's a charm, right?)

As quoted in What HiFi:

Quote

This means YouTube has signed a deal with each major music label - Warner Music Group signed with the company earlier this month. The deal reportedly means artists will receive better royality rates from streams, and the platform will be more stringent when it comes to user-uploaded content.

The marketshare seems to be almost fully occupied by Spotify though and a bit of Apple Music, althoug I only know of 2 nerds that use apple music, Maxine Tamoto and me?. We'll have to see how this turns out for YT.

You know what we need? ANOTHER music streaming platform! Youtube is owned by Google now, so why don't they just plug the Google Play Music service into an ad campaign?

Unlikely they need each other: Youtube has the audience and Vevo has "the talent". Neither would be as successful without the other side so this is probably a plan to incorporate and cut in Vevo into the revenue directly.

I wouldn't be surprised if Vevo subscribers were offered free transfer of service to this new youtube music thing.

I think what they're trying to do is combine YouTube Music and Google Play Music into one streaming service, since at the moment it's pretty confusing. if you buy YouTube Red, you get YouTube Music, but also Google Play Music, and if you buy google play music, there's no indication that you're getting YouTube Red.

So... Google is starting a competing service from the Youtube platform... when it already offers Google Music.

Who knows what is going on in the mind of our Google overlord these days...

I'm confused. what's going to happen to YouTube Music?

Also Remix is the most generic and awful sounding product name ever. YouTube Music as a name works just fine.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Well, it doesn't explicitly state it in your bill (I pay through GPM), but the YouTube logo in the corner of your browser and apps say either YouTube Red or just Red. Plus seeing all of the Red exclusive content for the creators you follow.

I used to be quite active here.

Im not thinking of switching from Spotify for a while. The best alternative imo is Apple Music. All other solutions just off the radar.

if it works better than Spotify and has all the music i listen too im jumping in an instant, but so far a big chunk of what i listen too dosent seem to exist outside of Spotify

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Heres a question, was this announced/in plans before the 1.6 billion dollar lawsuit against spotify or was it opportune to announce it now that spotify is in a rough spot. It'll be interesting to say the least.

CPU - i7 6700HQ @ 3.50GHz GPU - GTX 965m - 16 GB DDR4 - 500 GB SSD

For about 750 USD
