CPU upgrade

Hi,

Lately, my cpu started to get weaker, an i5 4690k and i can't do overclock because i have a MSI B85 G43, I have freezes and fps drops which is kinda annoying. I thought about to get a new CPU, an upgrade to i7 4790k or to go on coffe lake. What should i do?

CPU: i5 4690k

GPU: GTX 1060 6GB

RAM: 16Gb Ram

MB: MSI B85 G43

Storage: SSD 120gb Intel + HDD Seagate 500GB

I'd say that if you just want to game the i5 is still a decent pairing for the 1060, might want to try DDU in safe mode and reinstall the drivers fresh new first, also check if your OS is clean and doesn't have bloatware/malware slowing it down.

 

The i7 will definitely help specially at minimums( 0.1% and 1% lows) but not entirely necessary straight off specially because you're stuck to a non-overclockable board... so an i7 4790 would help in smoothness but not increase your fps much or any thing... then again you might not need it.

 

Major issue upgrading to something newer would be the sky rocket DDR4 ram prices too... otherwise a Coffee Lake build wouldn't be all that farfetched...

That's a Seasonic s12ii? Obsolete group regulated design... I'd replace it when you do a full rebuild. It's not something critical.

 

I suppose your frame rate dips to be caused by other reasons, probably a dying hard drive. Your specs are average for a mid range gaming system which means it should be good enough

While you can buy something better for the price the unit once was making it a bad purchase new there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, the slightly out-dated design was still solid enough, reason why it was the budget alternative for years, OP has no need to rush a replacement.

if you had gone with an asus board you would be able to overclok it  i had almost the same setup you have, but with a 480 and an asus b85 pro gamer, which managed to oc my i5 to 4.5ghz.

(fyi new amd chips coming in the next few months, that might be very interesting)

That's why I told him to replace when most of his parts are getting replaced. It's reliable, just like any other Seasonic PSUs.

t. m12ii 520w owner, running 4670k @ 4Ghz and 1070 off it lmao
