Will a Xeon work on a Dell optiplex 9020?

Looking to upgrade my gaming PC. It's a Dell optiplex 9020 with an upgraded 500 watt psu, as well as an RX 470. It currently has an i5 4570.

I play a lot of CPU heavy games and I also plan on starting to stream on twitch eventually.

I was looking to buy the Xeon e3-1230 v3. It runs at 3.3 GHz base with hyperthreading.

But my only concern is motherboard comparability. I know that the Dell optiplex 9020 motherboard works with devil's cannon. But I can't find any word on Xeon compatibility.

Usually if the socket fits the cpu then it will work. It might be worth getting a second opinion juuussst in cast but if it were my computer I would feel confident that it would work

No xeon is not listed as being compatible.

Considering what it is, they wouldn't list xeon whether it was compatible or not due to Xeons being in a different category for Dell.

Considering that , dell has no reason to add xeon compatibility to this board....... So buy one at your own risk. I'd sooner just pick a compatible i7.

You guys bring up some good points. I may just end up going with a 4790k

i'm leaning towards that it won't work.  I have a couple of Dell Precision T3500 workstations that are Xeon's and the spec sheets for those list only types of Xeon's supported.

This guy on youtube is putting a Xeon in a Dell Optiplex 360, if you fast forward to 1:50 he's trimming plastic off the Xeon, at 2:43 he's covering some CPU pins in order to get this to work.  I know you are talking about different models but thought I'd point this out as you might run into issues.

To update this thread, th OP's choice will probably work, as I picked up a 9020 MT a couple of days ago from an auction that is running an E3-1225 v3 just fine. I just finished installing Windows 10 on it without issues.

I have a 9020 without a processor .... long story
I am looking forward to make a media center with it ...
I think i will get a E3-1220 V3 to make the test

Hi,

I just got my hands on a Dell 9020 MT as well but no CPU.  I was able to get a Xeon E3-1231v3 from work and just installed in the motherboard with Windows 10 on a SSD.  I have a really old GT 630 and connected that to my monitor via DVI.  I get nothing on the display through the DVI connection.  Can I connect to the motherboard VGA or maybe connect to video card VGA, to get to BIOS or Windows?
