Yeah when I was planning on upgrading I was debating just upgrading to the 4790K, which while it was older, meant I could keep my 12GB of ram. Honestly If I didn't know somebody who I knew would buy my old DDR3 sticks and a few other parts I probably would have stayed on that Phenom II system...

Could it possibly happen within a few days or weeks of the investigation's finding?  

 

Even better, I'd love for anyone who bought at a higher-per-GB cost than the screenshot, since then, to either get a refund to what the price SHOULD have been, or a free upgrade to higher capacity / faster RAM.  For example, say you bought 16GB (2x8) of DDR4-2666 for $200.  You'd either get refunded something like $130, or, get a free 32GB (2x16) DDR4-4266 kit shipped to you.

(And if you had already maxed out for that platform - for example 128GB DDR4 on HEDT, they'd send you like 512GB DDR4 Registered ECC along with a compatible motherboard & CPU.  Okay that last one's a bit of a dream )

When I built my PC 16GBs of ram cost me $90 shipped. now it costs double that without shipping...

Honestly I actually had no idea how cheap DDR4 really was, I only know its price for the last 8-9 months, since that's when I started to look in building a new system.

I just checked and tripled checked to be sure that price from above is for laptop memory and while I can't find the exact model here is what I would pay right now for just one 16GB stick:

Was going to get a screenshot, but can't fit enough on screen on mobile ... Well, just go look up DDR2 ECC buy-it-now prices on eBay. (Especially the 8GB DIMMs in lots, 32/64/128GB, etc.)

And  thought that paying $130 usd (with shipping from the US to Australia) for 2x8GB @ 2800MHz was expensive as hell since a 4x4GB kit of DDR3 cost me about $90 usd in 2014. I don’t care who, but someone has to fix this somehow.

Yah the system i assembled for a guy has RAM the same price as the CPU, more expensive than the motherboard and a total of 1/6th the cost of the system total almost... RAM needs to get down to what it was when I built my Haswell machine, and PSUs too could take a nice dive because a CX450 is almost as much as my damn G2 650W was...

At this point, I would probably start looking at X99 and ECC RAM off-loaded/sold by server shops. Those sticks may be slow and the ECC would be useless for most consumers, but at least it only costs a finger.

Maybe computer hardware is becoming more expensive as a whole? This might be an interesting development, if true, but hopefully not.
