Secondary Graphics Card For Display Output Only?

Patrick Grimson

So I have an R9 270X 4GB from Gigabyte, and one of the DVI connectors mysteriously broke after lending it away.... I did have three monitors connected to it, but now I am unable to connect my third monitor to it because of the broken DVI port. My question is, I have a GT 620 laying around. If I was to install that alongside my 270X, would I be able to use the 620 as a display output only, while still rendering games and such on the 270X?

If you can't x-fire/SLI the cards (which you shouldn't want to do anyways): nope. The output of the card gets done by the card. I had the same kind of issue where I wanted to clone my screen using an GPU and iGPU output connector thingy.

Hmmmmm. OK. I was able to get it to output from GPU and onboard graphics at the same time, but it was VGA from the mobo and had weird lines all over the screen.

You can try use the GT 620, but make sure you dont install Nvidia drivers. Two graphics drivers will clash.

Yes you can, not sure what those guys are smoking but yes. For 2d display easy it may even work without drivers. Having both drivers on sites work but you could have issues. Try it and see.

You can even run multi gpu with and and nvidia.

Thanks all for your help. I went to install the 620 but found out that the x8 PCIE slot actually has a backing at the end of the slot, and isn't open so I can't install the GPU afterall.

Ah but that's where you're mistaken, you can cut the end out and it'll work. Look up a guide on YouTube. The card and motherboard will be fine as long as you don't somehow mangle the pins (their not that close to what you need to remove.

you have been able to run amd/nvidia for long time like 5k/2xx series

all depends on main monitor

now days seems like either/or doesnt matter

back then when when I was running mulitmonitor ouput it depended on head monitor
