gtx 1060 3gb or 1060 6gb

Im looking to upgrade my GPU (i have a r9270) and i was wondering if it worth the extra money for the 6gb version Im just doing 1080P gaming  . im also looking to one day do VR i know the 6 GB version is good for that but i didnt know if the 3gb version can hold up just as good

The 6gb version is also around 11% stronger ,street guru were I live a 570 costs the same as a 6gb 1060 and is a weaker and hotter card with worse drivers. Rocky I would recomend the 6gb card if it is in your price range but I use a 3gb card and have not had any problems with vram so far but if you are keeping it for more then 2 years it may be a huge benefit down the line.

I would choose the 1060 6GB or 580 8GB (though the 580 will suck by the time VRAM becomes the limiting factor).

Play it safe and get the 6GB 1060

Depends on what the rest of the build looks like really. Going 1060 3gb means more to spend on something else, RX580 means you can use an affordable Freesync monitor. Note that I strongly disagree with any gaming builds using brand new 1060 6gb because of its silly price. I would rather have a 10% slower card than paying extra $80 (it's $180 for a 3gb and $260 for a 6gb)

The 3GB 1060 I feel is just a bit too limited, like it's going to need replacing sooner than any of the other cards around it

 

there's also no reason for nvidia to have released it at 3GBs, it's like they know people will want to replace them sooner.

The 580 is a better buy overall than the 1060 if pricing is the same

I have an i5-7500 and no headset yet going for the vive

Well your CPU isn't great for VR exactly though I wouldn't suggest upgrading to a kaby lake i7, and you're better off using the VR headset money for like a 1070/ti as you probably don't want bare minimum hardware for VR

They dont differ too much in performance. The problem with new cards at this price range is that they dont always maintain the 90fps optimal frame rate for VR games. I myself would get a used 980ti for about the same price, but a 1060 3gb let u upgrade with less pain.

Cutting texture settings in modern games dont always make them look bad. Also, 1060 3gb as the fastest card that still managed to dodge the crypto currency bullet. Just look at how RX x70 and x80, as well as 1060 6gb prices got punched up by miners.

If you're saying "One day VR" then none of those. There are games TODAY that a 1060 6gb really struggles to play. Fallout 4 VR and DOOM VR really struggle to hit 90fps on 1060's. Even 1080 ti's get 20% reprojection figures in Fallout 4. This is on todays hardware. I expect by the end of 2018 to have some next generation headsets with higher resolutions which will push graphics cards even harder than current VR. 

 

However VR aside, I'd go with the 1060 6gb. RX 580 8gb cards go for nearly $60 more than 1060 6gb cards and they perform virtually identical.

i play VR games on a daily basis and i can confirm you that if you do some super-sampling (which i highly recommend you do whenever you have some spare GPU processing horsepower btw) then you'll realize that some and many of these games will happily use 6 to 8GB of video memory...

 

For example in onward i use 1.7X super-sampling and the games is beautiful and runs at 90hz but i use all my 8GB VRAM because 1.7 x 2160 x 1200 = 3672 x 2040 = 7 490 880 pixels and you have to render the geometry and lighting twice...so yeah, the more GPU and VRAM you have for VR the better...even a GTX 1080ti 11G is not overkill if you do for example VR racing sims like project cars 2.

GTX 1060 6GB bare minimum for VR.

I really appreciate this detailed answer I think you persuaded me to go more of the 6gb version would it make a difference if I got the superclocked version or not

no not really, just get something at good price with a decent cooler and you'll be just fine!

Good decision to go for the 6Gb 1060. The 3Gb isn't the same card with less VRAM, it's a gimped card.
