does anyone know a card equivalent or better than an NVIDIA GeForce 220 / ATI Radeon HD 3870 for fairly cheap?

A GTX 260 can be had for as little as $10 these days, but I'm guessing you want to go a wee bit higher up the food chain than that. What's "fairly cheap", and are you willing to go used?

If you have a somewhat modern Intel gpu, I'd just use onboard graphics until you can save up for a gtx1050 or better or maybe something like a rx470 or 570.

I enjoy tech, gaming, and promoting the metric system.

I enjoy (Manjaro) Linux on my laptop, though my desktop runs Windows 10.
PC:

Spoiler

CPU: Intel i7 6700
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070
Motherboard: Asus Z170 A
RAM: Corsair Vengence 8GB

my budget is $100 or less it doesn't matter how powerful it is it just needs to run Scrap Mechanic at 20 fps or so also my pc is around a 2005 pc or whatever ran windows seven home premium service pack either one or two but I've upgraded to windows 10. I have never replaced components in a pc before so I don't know anything about any of the technical stuff just that I'd like a VGA card so I don't have to get a HDMI to VGA adapter

heck.
