Bought a VA 32"4k monitor for $360, saw a 49" 4k IPS 4K TV for $370, is there a reason I shouldnt return the monitor and get the TV?

LaboonTheWhale

Hey guys.

So on black Friday weekend I bought an LG 32UD59-B for around $360 and was pretty happy with it. The VA panel definitely isn't as good compared to my 1440p ips panel next to it but better than TN. But I went to my wholesale club nearby and noticed an LG TV there that was also 4k.

The TV model was the LG 49uj6300. This TV is definitely on the more budget side of 4k TV but also seems to have some differentiating features. Ips panel, active hdr, and considered a smart TV with built in wifi for Netflix and such.

I know that the monitor has freesync which I am sadly not able to utilize with an nvidia GPU,  but also displayport and whatnot while The TV only has hdmi which is occupied by my vr headset.

I can get a splitter or a display port to mini for the vr but would it be a better investment for the TV?

Thanks

what HDMI type does the TV have? if it is 1.4 you won;t be able to get anything higher than 30FPS on 4K

if it's 2.0 you should be fine.

LGs website states hdcp 2.2 under hdmi which I am not too familiar with that lingo.

TVs might have a much slower response time which is annoying in some instances.

Because TV sucks as a monitor.

My main gaming is on a 34" for single player and a 27" 144hz for twitch shooters. This tv would be meant for content consumption like video or if I want to just want to bench a game hardcore.

It would be for more video consumption than any kind of fast paced gaming.

I had 1080p LG TV (59Hz) now I have Samsung 4k TV (50Hz).

On both TVs the video playback is incredibly stuttery even with Game mode turned ON to the point that any content is unwatchable.

Only fix is setting the TV to 24Hz or 23Hz.

Everything runs nice and smooth on a 60Hz monitor set to 60Hz.

I've also noticed many scaling issues when using TV's (images cut off on the corners) on more than one setup. Personally I'd just keep the monitor. I'd never buy a TV to be used as a computer monitor

I would return the monitor and get the TV. You can keep it connected or use it standalone for videos and other uses since you have a monitor or two.

@WereCat the stuttering was due to 24Hz sources being translated to 50 and 59Hz.

Here's a test of the UJ6300.

Clearly it has some shortcomings, though surprisingly the input lag is actually very good for a TV.

Brightness and contrast are below average. VA panels are typically particularly good in that area, so that's one place you'd be a lot better off with the monitor. Color gamut is not great, and color accuracy is poor unless calibrated - but it's fine after calibration. Also it uses PWM for the backlight, so if you're sensitive to PWM flickering it's going to be noticeable.

It's not downright bad, but there's a reason it's affordable.
