Razer Phone Review

TheNaitsyrk

Hiya,

I finally received my Razer Phone and I must admit I'm pretty happy with what I received in mail yesterday.

I've been using it for a day but I'm pretty ready to write a review.

In advance I want to say that I upgraded from Note 4.

This is my first and only Razer product that I own.

Screen impressions: It's brighter than I thought. Same resolution of 1440P as my Note 4. Same size as well. I don't see much difference between the two even though Note 4 has AMOLED display.

My Note 4 screen is basically 8/10 and Razer Phone screen is 10/10. The 120Hz display is like a godsend. I will never want to come back to any other phone with lower screen FPS. Everything is smooth and nice. You just want to scroll for days and you get to the point in which you don't mind scrolling at all! I did not notice any screen imperfections / colours on Razer Phone. So far so good.

Build quality: Both are very sturdy but Note 4 is sturdier. Razer Phone is VERY SLIPPERY. I recommend to slap on a skin or a case (I just bought a case as well as tempered glass protection). Razer Phone doesn't look ultra flashy, but it's fine since case will be on it anyway 24/7. The blocky design of the phone is fine with me to be fair, even though for the past 3 years I was using Note 4 which was a little more rounded. 8/10 for build quality on Razer and 10/10 on Note 4.

Camera: If you're not as picky as me... You'll not find any problems with the camera. I tried it indoors and I tried to compare it to my Note's 4 and the difference was negligible in my opinion. The only problem I have with the camera on Razer Phone is that it doesn't have OIS which is a bummer but not a deal breaker, it's a phone not a DSLR so obviously it shouldn't be as good. Camera rating I'd give Razer is 6/10 whereas Note 4 is 9/10. I'm not a photographer, I just occasionally take pictures of me with friends or random stuff. It's not like pictures will be published professionally somewhere so the camera is sufficient. The camera on Razer lacks few options, but then again... I don't think you'll be buying this phone for the camera.

Battery Life: Blows Note 4 out of the water. Around 7 hours of screen on time and I am a power user, let me tell you. My Note 4 battery just plain sucks after 2 years. Phone turns off when it wants and battery is really bad about 1.5h screen on time. If you're listening to music via bluetooth then that's fine but otherwise it sucks. Razer's battery life is killer. No need to charge for the entire day! Razer gets 10/10 whereas Note gets 6/10.

Speakers: Not much to say here... Speakers are incredibly amazing, and there's two of them facing you. If you like to watch stuff on your phone while lying in bed trying to fall asleep or just watching movies... Then this phone is for you. Note 4 has a single speaker which is on the back so it always sounds weird as sound goes the other direction. Note gets 5/10 because sound quality isn't that "terrible" but Razer gets hands down 10/10.

Overall performance: Note 4 is obviously old so I can't really compare the performance but I will try. Note 4 feels laggier for sure. Everything loads a lot longer than on Note 4 and Razer Phone obviously opens and turns on really quickly. Satisfying fingerprint unlock is something I can definitely get used to. It being on the side as well on the Razer phone makes it so much better. That 8GB of RAM comes in handy and 835 Snapdragon, whereas Note 4's 3GB of RAM and older Exynos CPU and GPU are not really up to par any more. Obviously new iPhones get best performance nowadays but Snapdragon 835 offers more than sufficient performance nowadays, especially with that extra 8GB of RAM. I'd give Razer 9/10 whereas Note 4 will get 6/10.

In conclusion, I think the Razer Phone is good first attempt at creating a phone / gaming device at the same time and I'm looking forward to see their better creations. Their first attempt was really good and the price is awesome! I only paid £550 whereas S8 and others cost about £150 more on average. Razer phone offers unique features that aren't available on other phones and you don't have to pay premium to get them. I absolutely love the phone and if you're an audio enthusiast and movie lover / YouTube addict as well as if you occassionally game on the phone to kill time or you're slightly more dedicated and play games like Mobile Tekken and others then this phone is ABSOLUTELY for you.

The vibrator inside of the Razer Phone feels gimmicky but it's definitely not a deal breaker and it's only annoying when someone's calling you. It's not too powerful but it doesn't have to be.

If you have any other questions let me know, I'll try to answer or even provide pics!

EDIT: There's a small problem with the body of the Razer Phone. I had it in my bag wrapped in a soft shirt today and after a while I found some microscopic scratches at the back of the phone. Tried to rub them off with some water but it's not coming off. They're really microscopic but it bothers me slightly. Otherwise it's fine.

Overall average rating for Razer Phone: 8.8

Overall average rating for my old Note 4: 7.3

I think they're talking about the issues that people tend to have with Razer products after using it for a while.

Update: New Razer phone gets scratched on the back and you try to polish the scratches with a toothpaste to get them to disappear and you make it worse by making the surface shiny. I have two shiny spots at the back of my new phone. Had to order Dbrand skin. At least it's cool looking permanent solution that will never have to come off. Yay.

So heads up, the phone easily scratches on the back.

Constantly using my phone as a speaker instead of using Bluetooth one. Just thought people would most likely do the same if they buy this phone.
