Monitor Stops Working after OC to 165hz

Fixed the issue. I had to have the refresh rate in the Nvidia control panel set ot 60hz prior to overclocking the monitor. After I set the OC I was able to get 165hz just fine. 

So I just upgraded to my first display capable of 144+ hz and would like to get everything I can out of it. However, when I OC my monitor to 165hz my PC stops projecting the display. I believe it still recognizes the display because when I unplug and plug the cable back in a get a notification about setting up G-Sync. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. :D

You might be hitting a bandwidth limit of the mini displayport.

Doesn't have to do with that stuff. All about the actual monitor. You didn't win the silicon lottery. Just bump up the OC from 144hz in 5hz steps until it doesn't work. Then, go back to the latest working OC and bump up by 1hz at a time. Once it stops working again, turn down to last working OC.

Why so rude? Your logic is flawed. You're telling me that I shouldn't want to attempt to get the most out of my monitor. That's like saying I shouldn't OC a CPU or GPU.

Are you kidding? A 1060 is gonna get 70fps in most games, not gonna get more than 120 in any game, what are you going to do with 160hz?

It will push the frames. At 1440p it does 70FPS at ultra. The 1060 is perfectly capable of pushing +144FPS at low.

Besides you said to have G-Sync, overclocking the panel in the first place will temper with G-Sync functionality and you lose smoother experience for a few extra displayed frames, so much of getting most out of the monitor by disabling the thing that costs the most on it lolz...

Are you? I get 250+ FPS in CSGO, 120+ in PUBG, and 100 in most other games. If you're not here to help then leave.

If you say "I have a 1060" one is gonna think you'll be having 60 - 100fps because that's what demanding games that really use the 1060's power usually run at, not csgo

Update: seems like that cable supports 165hz @1440p. I don't see how my GPU would be the issue, though. I'm guessing it has something to do with having both Intel and Nvidia drivers or something like that.

GPU is not a problem. It's really just the monitor that isn't OCing very well.

Not really. At 144hz, 1440p, you do need a 1060 with the games he plays. CS:GO is one game, PUBG is a whole different story. He could be playing the Witcher for all we know. Anyhow, my personal experience goes this, 1050 Ti can do 1080p 144hz therefore 1060 is needed for about 50% bump in number of pixels. 50% more GPU for 50% more load. Roughly.

This is 1440p 144hz. Most people will only go with a 1070 or up for this. At 1440p 144hz, 1060 would be generally considered a "budget" option.

Monitors can or can't overclock refresh rates well, or if at all.

 

The GPU doesn't really have anything to do with monitor overclock as long as it has the standard ports. Even if you have a high speed 18gbps HDMI hooked up that can hold all dem bandwidth, if the monitor itself cannot overclock, then it won't overclock. 

 

Some monitors are made with extra headroom for overclocking, but for the majority you won't get a lot out of it. The monitor stops ''working'' at 165gz, because the monitor is saying ''I can't run that fast'', meaning that even with a Titan XP, the monitor can't run at that speed. Nothing you do will likely change that, unless you open it up and do some serious chipset modding.

 

So sorry to crush your dreams, give up on 165hz and find the refresh that the monitor says ''okay'' to. Even then, just like a CPU overclock, it may become unstable, so overclock with caution.
