You cant win in every segment.

rx 570 doesn't compete with gtx 1050 ti, it competes with gtx 1060 3gb while rx 580 competes with gtx 1060 (and they are equal at best).gtx 1050 ti fills the gap between rx 560 and 570.I also wouldn't call 580 better than 1060 and vega 56 better than gtx 1070.

 exactly my point i want to upgrade but the only nvidia card in question i hard to get for me and amd just has nothing thats worth upgrading to without needing to upgrade again in year. yes my 770 is working very hard to push its 20ish fps but upgrading now to have a 580 work very hard to push 40 and in a year cant even make 30 anymore like maybe im exaggerating here but you get what im saying

have you seen the benchmarks? maybe theres edge cases but most of what ive seen this one didnt do much of an impact on most games

Well I do get it, but I don't get why are you upset that AMD is doing some software improvements. Get your GTX 1080 TI already is MAX setting is your thing. You don't like what AMD is doing? Buy an Nvidia card

I've only seen the Guru3d benchmarks run on Polaris GPUs.

They show small improvements in frame latency. Which is all you expect because Polaris came out more than 1.5 years ago.

 

Not sure whether there are bigger improvements on Vega. Anyway my point is that AMD does work on performance improvements... It's pretty well known. So does Nvidia...

More big news on this front.

 

AMD open sourcing their Vulkan driver.

 

They are open sourcing their official Vulkan driver for Linux. However it is a shared codebase with windows. Basically this allows capable developers who are not employed by AMD to contribute to the code. And it allows developers of vulkan applications fantastic levels of visibility in terms of performance enhancements and investigating exactly where the bottlenecks lie. Game devs can then optimize their games accordingly, suggest improvements to AMD, or if they are capable even contribute some driver improvements themselves.

As far as when the open-sourcing is going to occur, it will likely be within a few days.  This Vulkan driver they are open-sourcing is their "official" Vulkan driver as found for Linux users already within the AMDGPU-PRO driver. It's also the shared code-base to their Vulkan Windows driver. Basically, it's their full-featured Vulkan driver that AMD has been investing in the past 2+ years.

AMD probably aimed to eliminate the need for all those "gaming apps" with their driver updates, they added On-Screen Display and WattMan (Overclocking tool) so you don't have to use MSI Afterburner at all for example, it's a nice thing to be fair. I've got to give it a shot on my dad's desktop cause I got him an RX 580 8GB recently from a friend and sold his old GTX 970, I can't do it on my PC since I've got a GTX 980Ti.
Also, since they are clearly committed to rolling out at least one big driver update every year, I don't see any reason to "hate" on this one unless something doesn't work as intended or is buggy, but even then complaining is a much more useless route than submitting an actual bug report with things that don't work properly.

I'm not defending anyone, I'm just saying how it is, the more features = the better IMO

Well, if a 1080Ti is hard to get for you, you can just get a 1080 or a Vega 56/64. It's not like those cards are garbage and won't be able to last a few years, it's most likely that you also simply don't need the 1080Ti unless you game at 4K... If anything, I'm almost certain that a Vega 64 would be a viable GPU for longer than a 1080 despite its flaws (price, power consumption) since they perform similarly now, trading blows from game to game depending on game engine optimizations. A Vega 64 has a lot more power "under the hood" than a 1080 and if AMD manages to squeeze some more performance out of it through driver updates it will probably be faster on average in some time, especially in new DX12/Vulkan-based titles.

It's only an educated guess, but this was the story for previous generations (Look at the 780Ti vs R9 290X nowadays) and it can definitely happen now considering all the extra features packed inside of Vega. Though of course, you should buy based on current performance, not some shady predictions EDIT: And also, based on your power bill! *gives a disgusted look at V64's power consumption charts*

Do you even need something like a 1080Ti? I mean unless you're running above 1440p and have some need (more want) to always hit near 100fps then that card is totally unnecessary. If that's the case then AMD does actually have options performance wise for all Nvidia cards below the 1080Ti. Do all of them make sense over the competing card? No, not really. Vega 56 is certainly a nice card and if you care more about future games it might be a more logical buy than a 1070.

 

Not that the above really matters much, we can flip flop comparisons back and forward about cards from both sides but the only universally true thing is that AMD doesn't have 1080Ti cards. I also personally don't take much stock in the whole power usage and heat narrative that gets banded around, mainly to degrade the appeal of the AMD cards, because realistically it makes very little difference. Actual power cost difference is negligible unless you're an outlier (extreme cost or play times) and non-reference AMD cards don't burn like a dying sun, unlike the reference models lol.

 

I've been running dual 290X's (ref but with EK blocks) since 2013, less than 2% of my games have crossfire issues that require me to disable it completely (I have over 300 games all mostly AAA titles not indie games). Performance wise only now am I having a real sense I need to upgrade, running 2560x1600 which really kills the 4GB VRAM, only getting 30-38 fps in Total War: Warhammer II with max settings.

 

Do note I'm not advising that you should actually buy anything now, it sounds like your 770 is doing ok and most games have settings you can take down a notch and get significant fps gains with no observable/visual difference. It is nicer/quicker to be able to just push everything to max that's for sure, but with a small amount of effort you can find a more balanced and optimal settings.

A good thing to note is a lot of games that don't support CF/SLI, generally are smaller games that will never need the extra power anyways.
Also, @cluelessgenius it isn't logical to turn everything to max. Somethings EAT FPS to all shreds but makes almost little difference on visuals. If you're playing at 1440p/4k, you don't need AA maxed ect.

So new AMD Drivers are good for mining, that's all and here people still thought AMD cared about the gaming market Seriously though nVidia is ahead of AMD in every tier and quite frankly the only GPU they have that I still consider valid option is the RX 580 for the mainstream usage (and mining for what is worth it).

 

VEGA lineup is a no go to me, maybe Navi will have better luck... and VEGA FE was the most failed ever attempt to copy the TITAN X ever.

ok heres the thing im running 3440x1440 or right now more like 2560x1080 out of neccesaty but would obviously prefer native res and no 100 fps is not required but dips are killing me and i do want all the max settings soo.. yeah i kinda feel like a regular 1080 or below isnt gonna cut it if im paying hundreds of euro anyway i might as well put 100-200 on top and get way better performance.

 

also about heat and power - usually i didnt care about that either but the way im going with my rig it becomes a concern i have a 600w psu and alot of stuff runnning of it already and cant just get a different psu not happening. also heat is an issue because unlike alot of my friends im not one of the guy going " let it be as loud as it wants im wearing headphones anyway" . i dont like unneccessary noise. if i save 100 bucks but have to put way more heat into the system thats not good 

 

also crossfire/sli is not an option since im on itx

 

balancing options is fine but no matter what i configure i end up with jagged edges and blurry textures since i find small drawing radius unbearable

right but if you cant go native res because your card choke on it then at sub-native res i looks even worse. to be clear i never play with aa for exactly that reason - it eats to much performance. also motion blur i find distracting. but virtually everything else should be maxed out to make me the happiest  

also the only case i will apply aa or any other drive tweak neccessary is jagged edges. i dont want them i dont need them and i will do anything to get rid of them

It's a very good update, the mobile app is handy. The in game overlay is so awesome and looks sleek, great to have such tools integrated in driver. 

Also Enhanced sync for all GCN GPUs now is much welcomed.

The VEGA 56 is a great card at $399. Pascal is just a process shrink to brute force higher clock speeds

I don't think that is too much of an issue on non-ref cards though? At least I don't think it is, using ITX is a big factor though. That extra heat in a small case will be a problem.
