What little information we have is that yields have recovered from the initial really, really bad state, but that's not the major problem now. 14nm++ is better than 10nm. Reading between the lines of what minimal information has gotten out, it seems like they can't clock as high. Since Cannonlake, the 10nm product, is simply a node-change of Kaby Lake/Coffee Lake, you're looking at products that clock lower & use roughly the same power.

That's why Icelake is the first 10nm products we're getting from Intel. It's a "new" core design. Iteration of the "Core" design. Intel ended up in a bad space because of what happened with the Nodes. 14nm saw possibly the largest improvement over the course of its life (nearly the same as a full node shrink) and 10nm has been really, really bad for Intel. They need the clocks to get close enough that the improved uArch can use the IPC gains to be an improvement.

It's better for high end clocks, but for mid-TDP products, 10nm is vastly superior. The 3GHz range chips all get much cooler, which is good for mobile, but you won't be getting your 4.7GHz boost for desktop again for a while.

If that's the case then it means that there probably is little reason to upgrade from a 8700k for a while then. I do hope this will gives AMD time to catch up in single threaded performance.

There is the rumors of Ice Lake's 8-core (which is Z390 only).

Yup, which a node shrink should always give you. Problem is the i3-8100, the lowest i3 SKU, is already sitting at 3.6 Ghz base frequency. Since Cannonlake is simply a node-shrink, Intel would have no useful Desktop product without faster clocks, which puts us back to the 14nm improving so much over the course of its lifespan.

The open question is why Intel isn't replacing their entire Mobile lineup with 10nm parts. It's only the sub-5w parts that Cannonlake will come to market, and that seems delayed until Q2 2018 already. My assumption would be that the product they are bringing online is the limit to the production capacity that'd still be profitable in this generation. Though Intel better have an ace up their sleeve with IPC and/or Cache speed upgrades with Icelake.

Is Intel trying to tell us their upper management isn't sober when they come up with these codenames?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

At some point, you know it was bound to happen. Someone had to take a good shot of Whiskey to approve another 14nm rollout.

Where did you hear that? All the recent roadmaps show everything up to 43W parts.

Last Mobile Roadmap leak I've seen has CNL-U & CNL-Y parts, but that's 5W and 15W. I haven't seen anything where they're replacing any H parts (so 25W and up) with Cannonlake. Any sign of a GT3 equipped CNL SKU? (And that's a lot of TLAs, lol)

I'll take any type of "Lake" naming over the basic "Ryzen 2" naming scheme.
