Ryzen 3 - How far can I OC?

Hey guys,

I just got my Ryzen 3 1200 with an MSI B350 MATE and Ballistix Sport 2400MHz RAM. I am cooling the CPU with my old H80i V2.

When running the AIDA64 stresstest I'm at 38°C after ~15 Minutes.

I followed the tutorial from TechYesCity and overclocked it to 3.8GHz like he did with the standard cooler. After 15 minutes of AIDA64 stresstesting the CPU is at 47-48°C.

Can I squeeze out more out of this? If yes, what settings are safe to go for without frying my system?

Each chip is individual and can OC differently - one can OC really high and other may not get more than 100-200 MHz. There is never a 100% accurate guide how to overclock your chip - just try until you find the best stable frequency!

What voltage are you running? I wouldn't want to go above 1.40v for 24/7 running although you could go a little higher or lower depending on how much perceived risk there might be. Clocks will be down to silicon lottery. Without silly voltages my 1700 sample for example only goes to 3.9. With silly voltages I can just get it past 4.0 GHz, but it is certainly in unsafe territory there. If you're really really lucky you might get more. No way to tell other than to try.

So I could try something like 1.35V and see how far I can go?

In short, yes. The thing is, you're close to the wall now, where you might need a lot more voltage to get not a lot more clock. Temps and power consumption will go up. When overclocking, I like to pick a voltage, then use Ryzen Master software in Windows to turn it up with stress test in background. Keep doing it until it is no longer stable or crashes, then back off and do longer testing. 

 

Actually, 3.8 at 1.275v doesn't sound bad to me anyway.

A little status update, I'm now at 4.0 GHz with 1.375V is this "safe" for the long term?

Temps seem to stay at ~61°C during stresstest but they sometimes spike to 67°C for a second (is that normal?)

 

I only get a 584 Score at Cinebench while other reviews get 610+ at 4.0 GHz could my single channel memory be the "issue"?
