Razer launched "Gaming" oriented WiFi Router

Ethan.

Seems like Razer really is trying to expand their product lineup. A gaming-oriented Router, now?

I'd be curious to see how much their "patented" technology actually deals with signal congestion, as according to their own page:

Quote

Portal WiFi Router delivers a lightning-fast connection even when surrounded by your family’s or neighbors’ devices jamming up the network. You can seamlessly extend your network’s range and coverage by simply adding an additional unit—even in multi-story homes.

It's a bit odd to see that, as far as I can find on the RazerZone page, they don't mention how much/if their boost technology impacts the speeds implied by their AC2400 rating.

I'd love to see a LTT review/thoughts video on this.

Just like with some "network prioritization" that some NICs or motherboards or routers have, some stuff will go slower and some stuff will go faster.

Instead of having to process every single packet of data it is much more effective and latency free to simply prioritize your computer's IP address, or simply throttle other IP addresses that aren't yours.

Any kind of "smart prioritization" will just be an increase in resource use, additional latency, or make no difference at all if your router is never at 100%.

This seems like a bunch of "gamer" marketing, just like most of their other products.

Netgear and Linksys already provide better routers tbh. I'm not going to buy something from a no-brand like Portal.

"Portal WiFi Router delivers a lightning-fast connection even when surrounded by your family’s or neighbors’ devices jamming up the network. You can seamlessly extend your network’s range and coverage by simply adding an additional unit—even in multi-story homes."

Watch this space for futuristic technology such as "changing frequency" and "Wifi repeaters". :o

Like Enderman said its just marketing. Paying a premium for a lot of bs.

To be honest, this doesn't look like a bad router.  The bad part is this will probably be massively overpriced and bring almost or literally nothing that other 802.11AC wireless routers could bring.  The IEEE 802.11 standards have theoretical maximum speeds, the 2400 you see is just other atenas they add to make it sound faster, no matter what you use you are limited to 1gbps.

For the same price as this router you could probably get a really solid access point and a fairly decent standalone router with QoS and all that. Better off to get some solid network gear and do it yourself than buy some overrated router.

I actually like some of Razer's products, but I don't think this gaming router will sell very well, considering most people that fall for the hype don't even know much about networking, they just want an awesome gaming setup.

That's it?

I expected some green machine guns, green painted naked girls, green snakes, green edges, the word gaming written in green, a big green button that explodes when you press it, and other typical things for them. But not this.

If you take away the portal writing it would look like something from apple.

Pick it up with zsilver when it's added and no complaints. Also wait for the Chroma version. :)

This looks like what you would end up with if you excessively applied the smooth tool to my TP link router(its actually not horrible somehow)

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Best way to get "gamer" performance is massive MIMO and either multiband or something like 80MHz channel width to deal with the noise around you. Really, Ubiquity and the other prosumer grade stuff is best.

This reminds me of the Kickstarter of it. Where you end up paying more during the Kickstarter to get it early and deal with the headache. I don’t know if I’m allowed to post the Kickstarter link.

You might want to see reviews on some actual experts on this matter, LTT has neglected the audience who crave stats and numbers in recent years. Like Linus has said, the channel is supposed to provide entertainment, not in-depth analysis.

I mean I am glad people here are judging its performance on looks. Because we all know router performance is based on looks right?

Does anybody know if there truly something special to their DFS implementation with "ZWDFS"? They mention detecting radar activity but that is not new, every AP has to be able to detect and move to radar to be allowed to operate on DFS channels. Is their "proprietary technology" just a DFS hop that lands on a different, clear DFS channel instead on a standard 5Ghz channel after radar detection? Or just regular auto channel selection with a short timer?

No Razer Chroma, 1/10

In all seriousness though, this is just marketing BS.  I'd like to see it outperform any decent router at that price range.
