Both are connected, and has supported other hdd in the past

What other hard drives? 2.5" and 3.5" drives have different power requirements, and it's possible that it cannot power the drive you're trying to use, or the adapter is non-functional.

When using a Sata to usb adapter the HDD is recognised but as an empty device, with no storage.

Any ideas, thanks

What does the sata adapter look like? Are you properly powering the HDD?

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

Do you have another drive you can try it on? Just to make sure the connector still works.
