Which Ryzen CPU for a 1070

CPUs bottleneck refresh rate

GPUs bottleneck resolution/quality settings

an R3 1200 is going to be mostly fine for 60hz gaming, though an R5 1400 is likely preferred if you can swing it

Shoot for an ASrock Pro4 motherboard minimum, and just stick a fan over the VRM

There's how ryzen scales in games

I do understand what bottlenecking is. My question is, why the hell would you need a 1070 if all you need is 60fps? All you need is a GTX 1060, maybe even a 1050 Ti would be sufficient for that in most games.

FWIW, I used to run a 2500K overclocked to 4.5GHz, which is probably faster than a Ryzen 3 overclocked to 4GHz. The lack of threads killed performance in CPU bound games like BF1 MP and PUBG, especially in heavy firefight scenarios. Yes, considerably less than 60fps, for those wondering about '60Hz gaming'.

I've since upgraded to a 2600K, and minimum framerates are a LOT higher simply due to the CPU not being thread starved. You know what happens when you pair a 4C/4T CPU with a fast GPU like a GTX1070? You get high AVERAGE framerates because when not much is happening in game, the GPU isn't bottlenecked and renders scenes at 100fps+ easily. However, when the shit hits the fan so to speak and the action heats up, 4C/4T CPUs like Ryzen 3 will choke and drag MINIMUM framerates down well below 60fps in CPU bound games. It happened on my 2500K, it will happen on a Ryzen 3.

That is my 2C on this matter, based on real life gaming experiences. The OP can choose to use or ignore the information as he sees fit, I just think it's a waste of money pairing a Ryzen 3 with a GTX 1070 when spending a tiny bit more on a 4C/8T Ryzen 5 as a mimimum would see games perform MUCH better.

i'll just keep this simple since there is alot of mixed opinion.

you should NOT pair the gtx 1070 with anything lower than a r5 1600. my pref build for 1080p is r5 1600+gtx 1060 3gb.

However, since you got a 1070 already, just max out all settings and enjoy some eye candy.

r7 1700 is a waste of money with the ryzen 2 refresh coming. You can probably get a r5 1600 for around 170usd.

This does put u in an awkward spot for partial upgrades, i would not go with amd for 4k 120fps gaming in the future, and the 1070 isnt good enough for 4k. If this is not in the cards then get urself a r5 1600 and enjoy some max settings at 1080p 60fps.

Build to target your refresh rate if you are strapped for cash.

I agree with @Streetguru. If you can swing an R5, do it.

If you are going for 144hz, then you will want to pony up for coffee lake.

ok yea i began saving up For an R5 1600, ill most likely stick with this monitor i have ( great monitor)

Ryzen 3 is perfectly fine at 60hz, you don't seem to get what bottlenecking is...

Can you get more fps with an R5 1400 + 1070 vs R3 + 1070? Probably. does it matter when you're likely at/over 60fps with the R3? not so much.

They'd just be adding more cores to each CCX, probably 6 cores per CCX then 8 cores. Especially useful for the server market. When they get to GF's "7nm" that's likely easier.

No bottlenecking is whenever the component in the PC can't be reached to its full potential in this case a 1070 will be a MASSIVE bottleneck with a Ryzen 3 CPU go open GPU-Z and check GPU usage i gurentee a 1060 let alone a 1070 will drop below 80% usage in modern AAA titles.

"Does it matter if you are over XXX frame rate" Average frame= competently useless metric what matters is 1% and 0.1% lows and keeping those above 60FPS.

More importantly buying a 1070 and having it run at 70-80% usage means you just completely wasted money on the build and its terribly unbalanced.

A Ryzen 3 is already at like 90+ usage in basically any modern game and its working that hard while failing to maintain a 1060 at 90%+ usage let alone a 1070

Ryzen 3 should not be paired with anything higher then a 1050Ti and even then both the CPU and the GPU will be running at 90%+ usage if however one wants to tie themselves over to Ryzen 2 then sure a Ryzen 3 OC will be OK with a beast GPU as long as you upgrade so you didn't waste money on a 1070

It also means you can crank your graphical settings to the max with the 1070

In all of these tests aside from Watch Dogs 2 the R3 1200 is at 90fps or above with solid lows, aside from metro which likes threads it seems.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?
