an R3 1200 is going to be mostly fine for 60hz gaming, though an R5 1400 is likely preferred if you can swing it

Shoot for an ASrock Pro4 motherboard minimum, and just stick a fan over the VRM

There's how ryzen scales in games

Hi,

just wondering, At the moment I'm looking at Upgrading my system to a Ryzen CPU from a FX6300 I currently have a GTX-1070

and wondering if a Ryzen 3 1300x is sufficient enough to not bottleneck the GPU, if not which lower-end  Ryzen 5 CPU (1400, 1500x)

will work better (I'm on a budget (only 13))

so far it is used for 1080p gaming hopefully going 1440p in future

Save up for the R7 1700. Try to bare for now would be my answer.

Costs quite a bit in Australia over AU$400 plus with what I do I can't relly justify spending that amount of money when I can't really use those cores

Then if you're going with the 1300x, even the weakest i3 8100 trumps the 1300x by 9%. Check the price for the 8100 thought it should cost more than the 1300x but you never know.

Ok just while I'm on this what are your thoughts on the R5 1400, R5 1500x , or the R5 1600 will it be worth saving for one of these? ( R5 1600 is around A$280)

Ok I can save for the R5 1400 (it was either that or the 1300x)

The 1300X is almost never worth it over the 1200 unless they're the same price

Ok now just having a quick look in the video the R5 1600 @4.0ghz seems to be the best for gaming at it is nearly on-par with the R7 1700 in some gaming tests I might bite the bullet so to speak and go for the R5-1600 thanks everyone for their help :)

Right, most games don't use the extra cores/threads on ryzen 7

However I'd stick to what you have or just get Ryzen 3 for now, the Ryzen Refresh is coming with better chips

Yeah relised that, that's why i kinda disagreed with one of the above posts saying that go for the R7 1700 as games don't really use that many cores I'll just be wasting money if I got that as I Really only game not content create went with team red as the price was right for performance and intel even though can be better was a tad too expensive for my liking and my FX 6300 served me well

Heard about the Ryzen refresh will current chips get cheaper? Bc like above I cant justify an 8 core CPU

edited the post, the Ryzen Refresh is coming soon ish, with faster chips for the same money

Hmm I'll look into that though rumours say they are 8 cores

ill like something cheap now to just upgrade to the platform

( a lot of today games require above a FX-6300) that works with what I've got and that's has a great upgrade path for the future

Rumors are also saying 12 cores at 5.1ghz lol

not sure why they'd only launch with new 8 cores

Must of muddled up sorry probably 12 core

cant really justify my self getting a 12 core CPU

most likely go for an R5 1600

thanks to everyone for their help!

While I won't say that's impossible I will say highly unlikely (vega the Titan killer anyone?). 5.1ghz is possible if they don't increase cores and optimize for speed, 12c is possible but they would stay the same 4ghz speed - mostly due to power density constraints.  Also, 12 is a b**** to implement with zeppelin ccxs in the mainstream format

17 minutes ago, Streetguru said:

The current setup of 4/8+4/8 is easy, the ccxs are small enough that they fit on a consumer CPU and the clusters are small enough that individual ccxs don't start spazzing out with latency.

For 12c/24t it would need to be either

4+4+4

rrunning out of physical space, power density is too high, infinity fabric is even more of a handicap

3+3+3+3/4+4+2+2

/\ ditto but worse

6+6

ccx latency gets too high and there is performance degradation

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

I'm, sorry but this is nonsense coming from a Ryzen owner a Ryzen 3 CPU should not be paired with anything higher then a 1050Ti a 1070 needs a 1600 at least!

Games use more then 4 cores and with Ryzen it really needs too unlike Intel where a game can run fine on an I5 due to high IPC and frequency!

Again please don't buy a 1070 and pair it with a Ryzen 3 CPU you will see GPU usage drop below 90% meaning you wasted your money

already have the 1070 in my current system looking to upgrade to ryzen platform so far going for an R5 1600

just wanted to know what was the best but cheap cpu i could get away with

OK not only is this wrong but CCX latency is more prone to be an issue with Ryzen 3 as it only has 2 cores per CCX compared to Ryzen 5 1600 which has 3 per ccx.

I ask all Ryzen owners who have a Ryzen 3 CPU and a GPU above a 1050Ti to play games without V-sync on and look at GPU usage i bet everything that GPU usage is below 90% in fact i guarantee it if you are at 1080P or less.

That means you are CPU bottlenecked and you basically F'ed up your budget.

As others have said, a Ryzen 1600 would be a good match for a GTX 1070.

Ryzen 3 is pretty weak as a gaming CPU, its lack of threads really hampers it, sure you can overclock it to 4GHz with good cooling but that still won't make up for the fact it only has 4 threads which won't cut it with higher end GPUs like the GTX 1070.

The fastest GPU I would suggest for Ryzen 3 would be a GTX 1060

Build to target your refresh rate if you are strapped for cash.

I agree with @Streetguru. If you can swing an R5, do it.

If you are going for 144hz, then you will want to pony up for coffee lake.

Ryzen 3 is perfectly fine at 60hz, you don't seem to get what bottlenecking is...

Can you get more fps with an R5 1400 + 1070 vs R3 + 1070? Probably. does it matter when you're likely at/over 60fps with the R3? not so much.

They'd just be adding more cores to each CCX, probably 6 cores per CCX then 8 cores. Especially useful for the server market. When they get to GF's "7nm" that's likely easier.
