Anyone know of a volunteer tech shop like Free Geek that's in NY?

B14NK

I just saw Linus's video about Free Geek and am interested in volunteering there to A) get volunteer hours for school and B) work with computers. The closest of their locations are about 3 hours away so 3 hours there, 3 hours back, plus volunteering for a few hours adds up to around 9-10ish hours per day. Not to mention gas prices either (as well as that I despise car rides). So, do any of you know about a volunteer tech shop like Free Geek that is nearby to New York? Specifically nearby to Poughkeepsie, NY.

So I looked into this around the time you posted actually,  I spoke with the administrator of my local SUNY school IT dept. and he stated that in NY, it's illegal for any entity, be they Gov, semi-Gov or NFP that r/c Gov funding to "donate" or even sell their old tech to any old recycler or even private individuals (which is ironic considering its OUR money in the form of collected taxes that bought the shit in the 1st place) or a place like FreeGeek, unless they have a NYS or County/Town level "contract".  That essentially means that unless you're related to a Gov official and u own a recycling facility, you ain't getting anything.  All the private entities sell their shit to recyclers who sell it to overseas entities whom employ child/slave labor to harvest REE's or any other metals that are worth currency.  We're stuck trolling Saver's and Goodwills for one off private donations OR skimming the cesspool that is CL.   I :x NY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
