Apple has acquired Shazam

Shazam requires approximately 10 seconds to create a 'fingerprint' of the song.

No it doesn't, dude, Siri uses Shazam and it works in 3 seconds. I just did it.

I just ran shazam a few times with a few different songs. (Note I jumped to halfway into the song for each test.)

The Messenger - Elton John and Lulu (470 Shazams, 10 seconds)

Your Starter For - Elton John (854, 10 seconds)

Candle in the Wind - EJ (541k, 1 second)

Better Off Dead - EJ (2300, 10 seconds)

Philadelphia Freedom - EJ (27k, 1 second)

The Bitch is Back - EJ (10k, 6 seconds)

Carry On - Fun (2.5 million, 1 second)

Radioactive - Imagine Dragons (11 million, instantly)

I did a few other songs and it seems to be fairly consistent. Any very popular song (>20k records) will be recognized almost instantly. When there are <1000 records it will usually find it within 10 seconds. When you're somewhere between 1000-20,000 records, then it's 5-10 seconds or so.

Really Apple?

I stopped using Shazam years ago when Cortana got the ability to recognize music. Only problem I have in Cortana on Android is the lack of a dedicated check what song is playing button like how there is on Cortana for Windows 10.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

I got rid of Shazam because I didn't see a point in having it taking more precious space when something like it was already built into my phone. :P

I just use Google Voice, works well.

(I do not have Google assistant)

So for songs, I prefer Google... I don't normally have the ability to stop what in doing if I great a certain song.. so I'll highly the lyrics later and find out..

What would be impressive?? Use this to include movies with links to imdb and the ability to purchase through whatever service. Maybe Amazon will develop something better than Shazam to boost it's platform above Apple and Google?

And it's official.

I'm not actually convinced that Apple will yank Shazam from Android, at least not right away.  It'd be helpful for the Apple Music app on that platform.  But I really think the goal here is to give iOS the kind of song recognition you see on the Pixel 2, where your phone just knows what's playing without having to launch an app or ask Siri a question.  And if that's the only goal... then yeah, Shazam might disappear on Android, which wouldn't be so hot.

Even for a company like Apple with money to burn, that seems like an expensive buy for something with frankly minimal value to add

I'd imagine that the IP behind the functionality could be applied to different areas to improve Siri's capabilities, such as how it removes background and white noise to match the song, etc.

My guess is that Apple is buying Shazam more for its image recognition capabilities than song recognition.

in short, it’s all part of Apple's continued push into AR.
