Can I Revive my HDMI Port?

Ryois

So my laptop has a I think fried HDMI port. It will not detect a display when my laptop is powered on. But when I power off my laptop and turn it back on it detects the display but there is no signal.

Nvidia Control Panel shows the monitor, Settings shows the monitor. But on my monitor there is no signal. Is there a way to fix this with out having to do physical repairs on the port or what?8TKk22T.png

Sounds like either a software or hardware controller issue. A cracked solder joint or bad physical connection would make it stop working period. It's possible the display controller on that port is slowly dying and your chances of fixing that are nil but it's not a frequent issue. I'd boot off another drive even a thumb drive with Linux Ubuntu and see how the port behaves. If it's fine, then it's most definitely a software issue. Same issue, probably hardware problem.

Does it behave differently if you move the cable around?

Haven't tried Linux but after multiple reinstalls of Windows this has been present.

Looks like the port is fairly embedded in the machine...

I see yours has thunderbolt, are you already using that though?

It's only USB Type C Gen2 at 10Gbit, I dont think its wired with the GPU.

On second look, it seems you'd be able to visually inspect it by just removing the bottom cover.

If you do look at it, see if any of the pins touching the PCB move when you gently bend the HDMI cable up and down, if so, there's the problem

And I was talking about the other port, which I've never really understood. Is it thunderbolt or is it mini displayport? I know apple used it a lot.

I was talking about the mini displayport socket, which I see you're already using.

What happens if you disable that monitor and try JUST the laptop and HDMI display?

Also this model is not hard to service, looks like just 10 phillips screws and you're in. IIRC the only way to void an asus's warranty is to remove the CPU cooler, which won't need to happen.

Did you buy this machine new or used? If there's a bad solder joing on the port, it shouldn't be too hard to fix. But it it came new or its not a bad joint, I'd RMA it

It was given to me as a present for Christmas last year. It was new, now approaching 1 year. When a Dell monitor died on me I started to notice this.
