I don't own an X, but I like the screen to body ratio the most since my 8 has this tiny low-res screen sitting in a sea of bezel and it makes the phone an effort to use and doesn't feel premium at all 

if touch id was on the back how could  you use your phone while driving.

 

I'd hardly call the retina display low-res. There isn't that much bezel at all. I would suggest returning your phone if you don't like it so much.

A few things.

 

First: this is a rumor from Nikkei, not absolute fact, so don't put too much faith in it.  The main reason it has credibility is because KGI's Ming-Chi Kuo (who has a reputation for good sources) made similar claims a while back.

 

And if it's real, Apple going without wireless charging on the LCD model suggests that it'll be closer to a mid-priced device -- say, at or slightly above where the iPhone 7 is now.  It'd be odd to step away from wireless charging on phones at the 8's price point.

 

My hunch is that the OLED models could be considerably less expensive than the iPhone X, but priced higher than the 8.  Say, $799 for the 5.8-inch version and $999 for the larger variant.  Still expensive, but considerably more accessible and eliminates the need for an awkward "second flagship" that exists solely to offer a sub-$1K option.

 

I also see this as an opportunity to prune the model line given how large it is now.  Instead of carrying seemingly every phone announced since 2015, Apple could have a more focused line with two budget models (an updated iPhone SE and the 7), the middle 6.1-inch LCD model, and the two OLED flagships.

The 8/8+ have massive bezels.

Resonant charging can be done with a metal back, so it doesn't necessarily mean no wireless charging -- honestly, I can't imagine Apple removing wireless charging from one of next years models.

No, actually it's not. Taking your hands off the wheel isn't the problem. It's the lack of attention that's the problem.

Secondly, 9 hours is way too short. Try 90 hours or more.

 

Thirdly, burn-in, even fairly severe, can sometimes be hard to see. For example on my Galaxy S 2 I will not notice the burn-in unless I make a completely white image fullscreen, and really look at it. 

 

 

I have seen several people claim Apple were innovative when they started selling the iPhones in several colors...

I had the screen set to never turn off as I was downloading movies for an upcoming trip and turning the phone off pauses them. So I just plug in my phone and let it go. I also forgot about the whole burn in problem until a couple days later. So I followed a guide online to check for burn in and there is so traces of it. This was even after using the phone for about 4 weeks.

Second is depending on the content, there is def burn in. Might not be apparent in normal use but if you check with a solid red, green, blue background it might become more apparent. Seeing how its so early in its life you might not even notice it for a few months until they begin to dim. You cant avoid burn in.

1. You shouldn't be using your phone while driving. Even using your thumb on the TouchID button could lead to distracted driving.

2. Use Hands Free voice controls, either via Siri, or via Bluetooth - I use them every day, they work well.

3. Use Hands Free Steering Wheel controls if your car has them (When plugged in via the MDI connector, my iPhone 6s can change songs, etc, using the steering wheel controls

 

In many countries, including Canada, touching your phone at all while driving could land you with a ticket - or worse.

There's no way Apple is making 4 variations on size, with 3 of them all being 0.1" different from the next model. Seriously, that's fucking stupid.

 

Apple needs:

1. A small phone, iPhone SE sized or maybe a bit bigger

2. A "normal" phone - eg: iPhone 6/6s/7/8 sized

3. A "big" phone - Eg: 6 Plus/7 Plus, etc.

 

And that's it. That's a complete Apple product stack. Adding anything beyond this is confusing and unnecessary. The iPhone X would get shuffled into the mix, but that was mostly a test bed for OLED/Face ID. Likely one of the future "Plus" models will simply take the place of the X model.

And for those who don't think it is a problem,  I have seen the research first hand.  A driving simulator where each person driving was asked to use their phone.  The end result was the equivalent of being drunk as far as attention/reaction went.  They had one at the Melbourne motor show a few years back as well.  people were lined up to see if it was true.  No one can do it without a noticeable impairment.

Yes, unfortunately there are plenty of yahoos who think they're better.

 

Touching a single button, without taking your eyes off the road, once or twice is fine. But if you're relying on stuff like TouchID, etc, then you're driving wrong. Hands Free technology has been around for literally over a decade, and it has gotten pretty damn good at the basics (Eg: Music and phone calls).

I drive a lot better than most people tbh. I only really use it at lights or on the motorway. Siri does most of the work but sometimes i wanna choose a song.

I'm still a lot better than most tourists who think they can drive. You'd be suprised on what you come across.

Most people won't notice more than 720p at typical viewing distances, unless the phone is in your face. So for the average user 720p and better battery life makes a lot more sense than 1080p and worse battery life.

If you got the phone for free be more grateful. Its still very costly. I don't pick up my phone while driving anymore (Because the magnetic mount is super good). Face ID is only for the iPhone X.
