some guy and the cooling of a 980ti with cpu cooler

Hello , very new around here , there is this video i came across today , some guy used cpu cooler one of those big stuff from noctua to cool a 980ti it worked but , he didn't overclock it or did anything more with it . My question is ,would this metod be effective on a new gen card and how much ?

Welcome, I would assume that it would still be effective due to larger heat sink and more fan area but it just isn't practical at all. It would make the card ridiculously heavy and would block all of the other expansion slots.

It woudn't work at all without some very extensive modding. You need to mod the plate to make contact with the GPU and then find a way to efficiently cool the vrm's

It would work but it will also be a pain in the arse to implement

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

I've seen a few mods like this and if you have the space sure why not I'd do it if I had a spare card that was worth it. However, I'd try to use a cooler that blows down on the card because like the guy did it he's not giving the vrms enough airflow.

My parent's gpu fan has died like twice and I rma it 2 times. Then it died again right after the warranty expired. So I zip tie a case fan to the gpu, been working great ever since.

Well if you don't understand that you're gonna have to give it a little extra support that's your problem, I'm pretty sure he even says in the video that he created or at least used a bracket to support the added weight... then again with the added height it might just sit on the PSU xD

What about the VRMs, memory, etc? They get quite toasty even with airflow from aftermarket cooler and with this mod there is no airflow at all.

he leveled everything off with metal shims pasted in, then he put a sizeable heatsink on them, should be enough for any operation the cooler could handle

Anyone tried something similar to what this guy did? I've been planning the exact same project for a while now but never got the nerve to carry it out.

Now that i know it's possible, i'm wondering if there's anyone else into this kind of stuff other than me.

I am, but I would rather spend that time doing a nice liquid cooling or phase change cooling loop. Maybe even a secondary heat exchange loop with internal fluid and external phase change.
