Gaming in 4K - Upgrade or Buy New?

Except you're looking at a much, much higher system cost when you're going that route. Even buying the cards used, it doesn't make sense once you also factor in finding the right motherboard, a high wattage PSU, etc. To what. Get comparable results with a single much easier to run card? Hell even 2 1080Ti's wouldn't be much more than the cost of 4 GTX 980Ti.

Correct - this is all irrespective of costs. But if you happen to already have one or two of those older cards, along with a 5960X and suitable board, it's not worth tossing the entire system. A pair of 1080TI's in SLI is where I would be looking at today for 4K, but if SLI truly is dead for nVidia, they will need to make Volta be the card that can provide a proper single card experience.

Going into 4-Way is pretty neat though :D The cards are good for more than just gaming.

I have a gaming PC, Xbox One X and PS4 Pro.  Since the 4K HDR TV is only hooked up to the consoles, that is my preferred method for 4K gaming.
