Why isn't Linus in YouTube Rewind?

Go to solution Solved by This_guy1998,

Here is this years thread. Mods can you lock this old thread please?

Haven't watched YouTube Rewind 2017, I've only seen one Rewind and I think that was like 2-3 years ago. I think I watched it because I saw talk of it in comments section somewhere on a video I watched and then it popped up on my frontpage so I just gave it a watch.

Don't care for it. Cheers for all the youtube icons getting in it though, I guess.

As for Linus not being it, I imagine it's more focused on the larger youtube icons (Or at least other category youtubers) as some have mentioned. So I'd except to see people like Pewiepie, CaptainSparklez, Leafy, SuperWoman (Forgot her exact channel name.), and so forth (I know there's plenty more but I don't watch them. So I can't name a bunch of popular LetsPlayers/Vloggers/etc). Wouldn't really except to see tech youtubers in it.

I think it'd be cool though if it did, including a popular persona from each category of YouTube. (Well, maybe not EVERY category but several categories at least...)

OR, you know, maybe Linus declined. Or indicated at one time he had zero interest, because he's not pandering to 17 year olds.

back off from the big boy over here

So the YouTube Rewind video leaked this morning (as of now it's unavailable until 10 am PST). I wondered after watching it, Why isn't Linus in it? KeemStar made a good point:

Some of them in the video I didn't even know made videos anymore. Instead, why doesn't YouTube pick more relevant YouTubers like Linus and Luke to be in it?

I will update this with the link when it's live again.

That being said, at the end of the day, the Rewind doesn't even mean anything. I wouldn't worry about it.

I honestly hated it. My favorite one is still 2012.

Good; don't bother watching this year's, unless watching an ADD inspired cut mix set to really repetitive music that doesn't even flow properly is your jam. In fact, YouTuber Grandayy has a summary video that cuts YT Rewind 2017 down to the best parts, so save some time and watch it instead:

Portal A, the production company that makes YT Rewind, has done SO MUCH BETTER WORK in the past that it feels like this year YouTube said "shit guys, we have no budget this year, um, do whatever you want for as little money possible" and this is what they came up with.

Prior years and their other work is available here: https://portal-a.com/work/

YouTube should have hired TravAlma, PanosT2, or Dano Cerny to create both the audio mix and video for this years' YT Rewind. Then we might have actually gotten something worth watching, and I'd agree that Linus maybe could have possibly been in it.

My point is that merely making an appearance in a video isn't enough if the video doesn't tell some form of a story, or at least follow a pre-planned sequenced storyboard of some kind. It's great that YouTube gathers a bunch of their YouTubers in one place (usually New York), but this year they basically told everyone to form a twitchy ADD flash mob, then green screen them onto a bunch of random backgrounds and apply some rotational tweens and VFX to "make it pop", similar to design clients who want a website or photo to be "more red" when it's already #FF0000...

I'm still waiting for the day i'll see people like Wendell, Ryan, Krista, Mat (Mr. Techmoan), David Murray, BigCliveDotcom, MJR, LGR and others on Rewind, most of these are just teen celebrities.

And Felipe Neto, come on, he's a tasteless joke, a contradiction embodied.
