It seems like there is a lot of debate on what age kids should get phones. I personaly feel that if they are responsible enough, they should get a hand-me-down at 9-10, and get something better at 11-12

I submitted Other because everyone ages differently (mentally), unfortunately. I've met some 6 y/os that're more responsible than people in their 20's. More importantly so the parents need a good set of values too. Which sadly not many do, growing up I saw some kids with $700 smart phones. I'm not against giving a little extra to someone you love if ya can afford it. However that'd be like me using a 1080Ti to play RuneScape in 900p, way too OP even beyond "future-proofing". IMO if the parents are buying the phone for their child/teen, should be in the $200-$350 unless the kid is willing to help pay for it then sure go a bit higher.

I am in 7th grade, and have an iPhone X only because I offered to pay for it. I agree about the responsibility factor, as I have seen preschoolers smarter than some 30y/os ive seen I originally got a hand-me-down right before middle school, and I was only upgraded because my mom lost it

11-12. At that age they should be able to go to school themselves and take the train, bus, etc. At least that's what we do here in Vancouver.

Pretty common to see 11/12 y/os going on the train themselves or walking to school themselves.

IMO they should be responsible enough to get at least a budget phone ($170-$230 USD)

Nice man, haha this is making me think back to my 1st cellphone, a hand-me-down I got when I was 16. A gold Nokia 3310, on T-Mobile too ugh XD.

I don't know but one time when I was about 17 & had just gotten a speed-o-meter for my bike. I was testing how fast I could go down various massive paved hills where I used to live. While doing about 30 for a test run I decided to try again but as I slowed down I saw my 3310 slidding across the ground beside & past me. It crashed into a cement drainage ditch. Had some scratches but kept workin' fine for the next 6 years.

Greater responsibilities and the need the be connected with not just friends and family but other class mates along with the need to have information on call at any moment (especially in school) overrides any parenting opinions if you ask me.

You can restrict them but young teens simply need phones these days. They can't lug laptops everywhere and there isn't wifi everywhere on top of that.

I think its fine to have a flip phone that just calls and texts when they are 10 years old or so but they should get smartphones when they either get a job or they go into high school.I had a flip phone for 2 years in high school and just recently I got an old galaxy s4 for free off of a friend.

The only reason I'm here is that I have homework that I don't want to do

I had a phone when I was 14, and that was 18 years ago. Since times are the way they are now, I went with 11ish. That's when you start venturing out on your own or with friends, and it becomes a safety thing more than anything. It doesn't have to be a smartphone. It could be a regular flip phone.

My previous phone was a hand down s3 from my dad and my current phone is a J1 from samsung.

Dont really care much for phones, as long as they have a decent camera, can make calls and has enough processing power to have a few pages open at once, im good.

They can study with a computer.

Where do they need to go? The apple juice pub at 12 midnight with their buddies? No they stay at home.

They want a phone, then get a job and earn it themselves. Items like this are rewards earn through hard work, not just sticking your hand out and beg for others to buy it. If they show dedication and responsibility, then they will get a helping hand, say parent pays half of it, while their kids pay the other half. Buying something with their own money gives them a sense of achievement and independence.

Most have grown up and went to school before smartphones.

You clearly don’t realize the level of technology integration that is required in modern education that simply can’t all be satisfied with a laptop.

They should get just a normal pre-paid text and talk phone when they reach middle school to be able to call their parents and friends and have to buy their own smart phone and have to pay for a plan themselves
