Asus GTX 1070 Ti Cerberus: A card for Miners?

Nicnac

Asus has revealed a new 1070 ti model and since they already offer a bunch which are marginally different due to Nvidias ban on oc cards, it looks like they want to set it apart somehow.

Asus has presented a new Graphics card, which is especially tailored for the needs of Internet-Cafés or extremely long gaming sessions. All units of the GTX 1070 Ti Cerberus have been tested thoroughly and extensively. However, the specifications are same as the reference model.

They also say the card uses "premium components" to ensure longevity but which manufacturer doesn't say that about their cards ^^

The Cooling looks kinda beefy but also nothing too special which is kinda weird because since there are no OC versions of these cards that could utilise a triple fan cooler, an 'endurance' version would be the next best thing to have those.

However I believe this product is actually specifically made for the mining crowd, cause where else do you really have 24h loads and longevity becomes an issue?

They probably wanted to avoid bad PR so no mention of mining but on the other hand cards made specifically for mining might solve the shortage problem (We've had extensive discussions about this).

To me it just seems really weird to market a card for longevity and nothing else...

Again, maybe I'm just being paranoid and this is just a try from Asus to somehow stand out in the mess that is "custom" 1070 Tis...

What do you think?

Depending on the price it will be a good thing. But usually a mining specific car does not have video outputs.

Right, there are mining cards without video outputs, however most small scale miners (meaning everyone except those warehouse-sized farms) tend to avoid these because of bad resale value. A big part in a miners' Profitability calculation is always being able to resell their used hardware to gamers or pc enthusiasts.

This might solve that problem.

"Our extensive performance and stress tests begin with the very latest chart-topping titles — like League of Legends, Overwatch and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. We also carry out reliability trials that include a 144-hour diskless-system test and 3DMark benchmarking under heavy loading for 15X longer than industry standards."

144-hour stress test for the GPU? Damn. Whatever catches the miners eye though so that the card market isn't experiencing such a shortage again, hopefully. I guess this'll be a new thing for GPUs going forward... having a model aimed at miners. Assuming mining continues to be a big thing and doesn't fall off.

Isn't Cerberus a notch lower on the branding hierarchy compared to the Republic of Gamers?

A real mining card would have a blower cooler for stacking, industrial duty fan, a giant exhaust instead of video out, and components for high heat nonstop operation instead of fancy gamer/oc features.

Well that's the point. There are no oc features lol ^^ and lots of miners tend to go for gaming cards as I elaborated above.

There was a bit of misinformation going around when the 1070ti debuted; Make no mistake, you can overclock the 1070ti.

I7-7700k@5.1ghz + 1080ti @ 2050mhz + 32gbs Ram + 2TB SSD = CSGO

i7-6700k@4.9ghz + 980ti @ 1501mhz + 16gbs Ram + 1 TB SSD = Backup

i7-3770k@4.8ghz + 680 4gb + 32gbs Ram + 500gb SSD = Retired/Office work

Haha what? No, this isn't a card for miners. It's not even really marketed as such. Companies have used long gaming sessions as a selling point for a very long time. If it was a card for miners, it would have no I/O. I don't think the 1070Ti is really a card miners would go after anyway.

I think you're mistaking "no oc version" for "this card can't overclock." The 1070Ti can absolutely overclock, and most companies are just putting out a piece of software you run to OC the card for you. It just can't be factory overclocked. There is a very massive difference between that and no oc at all.

Catering to just miners is stupid as they will buy the cheapest options available.

asus always delivers these types of cards that usually carry a lower price tag average pcb with very bland designs. Its the good enough card its not necessarily catering to miners if this thing was dirt cheap then sure miners would grab it up. if i see one of those boxes on ebay im snagging one up looks awesome af.

I've read through all this now and I don't know where the "for miners" part is coming from.  Literally nothing about this seems to be targeting miners.  It has normal video outputs, it talks exclusively about gaming... other than the increased durability I see no sign that there's a secret motive to sell to miners.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

the powercolor RX 470 mining cards had one DVI port, so lack of I/O doesn't seem to be true on all mining cards.

It's purely speculation on my side and part of the opinion paragraph of the news article :)

Ah xD well, I mean, that could be it, but it seems like such an elaborate coverup if that's really what they're doing that I question if that's really it

"Internet Cafes" this is probably for the Asian/Far East market.

Asus is Taiwanese after all. They'll cater to their home audience with special GPUs.
