i3 8350K Coffee Lake on a Z170 Motherboard

The motherboard used for this mod is definitely not a cheap one. MSI’s Z170A Xpower Titanium could probably even support 8700K, thanks to modified power delivery for overclocking.

The modder has successfully booted into Windows OS with i3-8350K processor installed on Z170 motherboard. BIOS modifications and microcode changes were necessary to make this work. However, saying that this mod works flawlessly is probably an overstatement. The integrated GPU is not available. In fact, even the primary PCI-Express slot is not working, but those might just be motherboard/driver specific issues. Further modifications could probably resolve such problems.

Intel claims that power delivery modifications for Coffee Lake-S LGA1151 socket made backward compatibility impossible. However, few weeks ago Adrew Wu from ASUS confirmed that the decision to disable CFL-S support for Z170/270 was dictated by Intel, while older motherboards could easily support them. This custom modification is just a confirmation of this claim.

All Coffee Lake CPU's  have to have a 300 series chipset board for it to work.

I'm surprised someone took the time and effort to actually do this.

We knew it's possible because of early prototypes but this is actually interesting.

I mean this can basically open the doors to testing if coffee-lake can perform properly on older boards and see if there's actually a performance or stability difference.

i love this, what i said is being proved xD i told you Coffee Lake didnt need those extra pins. i am certain a 8700K will go in there, and overclock(potentially not AS well) without blowing the socket

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

This just shows Intel could of done it. So before I get upset at Intel for making a money grab wasn't the reason they decided to ditch the old chip-set for coffee lake cpus was because of the risk of z170 not guaranteeing enough safe power to them? Or am I dead wrong?

they added a coupple extra pins for that yes, but im pretty sure thats entirely bullshit. we have had sockets with fewer voltage pins, drawing more power, without a problem

They've done this before though with LGA 2011. On the original LGA 2011 (X79) it supported Sandy Bridge-E and Ivy Bridge-E but for Haswell-E they made people buy new boards (X99) with the same socket basically just with a 'V3' on the end of it and it wasn't backwards compatible so you couldn't put in a 4960X (LGA 2011) in an X99 board.

Intel did add DDR4 support to X99 so it's not like they locked out compatibility and gave you nothing back.

No it doesn't. Until someone can show an 8700K working on an uber cheap board (which was Intel's primary stated reason for modifying LGA 1151), this doesn't prove anything.

I want to know if 6 core 8th gen chips can still work though. I mean, 8350k is just a renamed i5-7600k.
