"Skylake safe" cooler could damage Sky-, Kaby and Coffee Lake CPUs

Well, the weight of 1 kg equals about 10 N on earth (9.8… to be more precise) so 2 fans won't add much. I estimate 250 g per fan, so 0.5 kg in total equaling a force of 5 N. A NH-D15 weighs 980g without fans and 1.320g incl. fans. That's even less than I've estimated for general fans. That NH-D15 with two fans without being screwed in place would equal to a force of ~13 N.

Comparison of Devil's Canyon vs Skylake with a good picture of the thinner PCB with fewer layers by Anadtech from 2015. So Intel probably just optimzed the hell out of their chip to get away with fewer layers saving a few cents and not wasting a thought about weakening the chip.

its more of a torque than anything else, and the distance between the cooler and the cpu would also serve as a lever, so the force might be bigger than that, but i cant be brothered to look more into it :P

True, but there's no info by Intel on how much torque the chips can take. ;) Other than the … 250 g ish of a 120 mm fan … center of gravity should be right in the middle of it so at 60mm, let's add an estimated 30 mm distance between mainboard mount and fan, so it's at 90 mm distance and we have a total of 5 N for two fans. 5 N * 0.09 m = 0.45 Nm

Damn, I should go to bed …

Praying right now that my dark rock pro 3 won't end up killing my 6700k...

Get some string and tie it to the top of the case and maybe loosen the screws to take some pressure off the socket.

Interesting idea... I didn't even think about the fact that a lot of the pressure is just from gravity pulling the cooler.

I'll probably do that when I get to it (which knowing me means a month or two :P), thanks for the suggestion.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

I have my Dark Rock Pro 2 on my delided i7 4770k which has IHS just placed in there and held by the force of the socket clamp. There is definitely a lot more pressure on the CPU die than with stock but whatever...

If this was really such a big deal a lot more people would be having issues like this already.

Well if they are too heavy and put too much stress on the substrate, why don't we run no cooler!

I'm sure it'll be fine.

Per usual Sfekke came in and fixed the issue.

For the love of god do not attempt it, unless you want to have a laugh and see an old Pentium 4 burn .. then sure

I would like to believe Noctua spent more on R&D then Dark Rock developing their NH-D15 mitigating such issues. *crosses fingers*

Those with their motherboards set flat in a case likely don't have this issue at all.

"Dark Rock" is not a company.

What does windows 10 and ET have in common?

They are both constantly trying to phone home.

Clearly I meant the company Be Quiet; simple mistake... But low and behold, Dark Rock is a company too.

Thanks for pointing that out.

I7-7700k@5.1ghz + 1080ti @ 2050mhz + 32gbs Ram + 2TB SSD = CSGO

i7-6700k@4.9ghz + 980ti @ 1501mhz + 16gbs Ram + 1 TB SSD = Backup

i7-3770k@4.8ghz + 680 4gb + 32gbs Ram + 500gb SSD = Retired/Office work
