Yeah I know people have gotten used to using them interchangeably which is what annoys me since they're very different an distinct things.  What's especially strange is Intel even offers the true definition on their website:

 

 

and then goes on, in the same table of specs no less, to list a 4790k as having "8 threads", for example ?‍♂️

 

I don't know how it became standard practice to mix and match these terms but I don't like it.  It's like confusing jobs in the print queue with the print queue itself...

In a manner of speaking, a logical core is something an OS can schedule a thread to, since a thread is the smallest unit of execution that can be scheduled. But I just accept it as shorthand for # of threads that can be run per physical core.

 

Now the real problem is people often times don't know how the hell any of this works. I recall a few years ago on another forum where someone was claiming games were "dual threaded" and I asked what that was. They said "it's when an application can only use up to two CPU cores at once" or "it only has two threads going"

 

I'll let that sink in for a moment.

As a university student in california... this is all too common when laptops come up.

When people complain about the marketing around MacBooks when they know dam well they are better for university work.

I can't help but think that if each term had a distinct and clear meaning, and we didn't accept these "shorthands" and "abbreviations", maybe misunderstandings wouldn't be so common.  To anyone who already gets how it works, they can use these without issue, but for someone new reading and trying to learn, it's no wonder it's confusing and leads to confusion.

If some people are going "how many threads does your CPU have?" or "My CPU has 8 threads" then yeah, I could see this being a problem confusing a software construct with a hardware one.

 

But I guess technically speaking a CPU can have anywhere from 1 to N threads on it, depending on what it's doing

And that's the thing, threads aren't baked into the silicon, they're running on it So to say it "has a certain number" is silly; they've obviously used the wrong word.

In all honesty, saying what I said back there is stupid because just tell me what the processor is and I can find the specs myself. It's like some dudebro saying their car has four cylinders. Cool story bro. That doesn't tell me anything about the car.

The thing is, it's not just random people who don't know, it's basically everyone.  Tech reviewers, Intel themselves, etc. they use "threads" interchangeably with "logical cores"

People telling me a smart phone is somehow a necessity, I rarely use a regular cellphone the only useful thing a smartphone can do is gps however I have never been lost so it doesn't matter.

 

It is not a necessity it's a luxury, this is like people using literally to mean figuratively it's literally the opposite.

 

"Why don't you preorder it if you plan to buy it already" I like to make sure my game doesn't have cancer in it first

Don't know what you did at university but I enjoy automatic back-ups of my whole computer effortlessly in the cloud and high security features like Find My Mac.

Well worth it - especially with MacOS being much more stable and reliable than Windows 10.

I thought I came out high in debt only to be surprised I was below average for my year. And I had out-of-state tuition for the first year (which if I recall pretty much accounted for almost half of my total debt), took a summer semester, and graduated a semester late. And the only other assistance I got was from my parents for that first year.

 

So I don't know how people are raking up student debt.

So... backups to a cloud is a mac only feature? No, its available on windows as well. Google docs is also how most people back up their documents now in university at least anyway.

High security features? Okay, the find my mac is a pretty decent feature, but hardly unique in the market. There are a plethora of alternatives, though they need to be paid for. All together though not something most people are going to ever have to use.

 

Other high security features, like encryption, passwords, all stuff that you can do on a windows laptop as well, but past passwords they're not that important at all in a college student application. As for being more stable, I'd strongly argue thats down to a personal use case. I think a lot of the idea that windows is a less stable, or more error ridden platform at base is down to people modifying it, people playing around with it because its lets you do that. iOS is only more stable in that it doesn't allow the kind of deep configuration that windows does, which can be both a blessing and a curse because it doesn't let you mess stuff up quite as bad or easily in my experience.
