Good old x58/i7 980X @ 4.25 ghz for every day use. But can do up to 4.77 Ghz on aircooling for benchmark or if i need an ekstra boost of power. No big plan for upgrade in 2018. This old pc has every thing i need right now. Sata 3 (2 ports), USB 3.0 (2 ports), A bunch of SSD´s (4 in total where one is a M.2 NVMe SSD), powerful GPU (GTX 1080 TI) and a old but still capable 6 core CPU.

 

oh and i also have an Asus Vivostick TS10 mini HDMI pc powered by an Intel® Atom™ x5-Z8350 Processor.

 

For those of interest. Here are some screenshot og benchmark from my old junk.

 

First screenshot clocks for every day use and second one is maximum clocks for when i need a ekstra boost and shows M.2 SSD speed on PCIe gen 2.

 

 

Firestrike and CINEBECH R15 benchmark to prove that the system and CPU is stable at these clocks. First firestrike is with every day overclock and second is max. CINEBENCH R15 cpu is pushed to 4.77 GHz compare to 4.72 in fire strike so that you can se there is more in this CPU than i ran it at as max clock.

 

 

So yeah cant really see a reason to upgrade yet. Also X58 has proven over the years to be very stable and hard to kill even with years of abuse and torture. As you can se above my CPU is at times pushed hard, but it has survived so far.

It is a possibility.  Also, could be since the Sandybridges where very good chips, individuals who held out during then switched over to Intel.

I remember several individuals on forum boards where waiting on AMD's response to Sandybridge and Ivybridge.  And, others who jumped onto Bulldozer then to find out the chips where not all that great later on flipping back to Intel.

 

Another thing to consider, new features and very nice motherboards came out with Haswell and Haswell-E.  I had a Sandybridge (a very nice 2500K that clocked to 4.8-4.9GHz).  It was solid, but did not have all the nice goodies Haswell has.

I'm running i7 3970X @ 4,7 GHz, and it's still plenty powerful for my needs. I also still got my old i7 3820, but it's been sitting on the shelf for a couple of years.

 

I just can't justify a platform upgrade, even if I'm starting to itch for it after some 5,5 years... So, for the foreseeable future, I will run this system until the CPU(s) or the motherboard pops.

 

For lols sake I got two GPUs of witch only one is plugged in for most of the time these days. Even if the primary pops (it's seen heavy bios mods and benching at 1,55V), I still got the other, much less used one, left...

 

Or, maybe I will upgrade to a new platform when DDR5 comes out, if I feel like it.

I use the four M2090's to do large molecular dynamics simulations. They don't have graphics outputs, so I can only use them for computations like folding @ home, and large simulations with lots and lots of molecules in a single simulation.

 

Honestly, I bought them only because they were SUPER cheap on ebay for the computational power they have.
