How do I apply thermal paste?

I recently replaced my motherboard and had to take off the heat sink and processor. I bought a new tube of thermal paste. How much do I need to put on the processor?

Keep in mind the myth that using "too much is bad", is just that. A myth. This is because excess paste is simply squeezed out by the heatsink.

 

With that in mind, you want to clean away any excess immediately before switching the system on. Thermal compound could be conductive, depending on the type, and either way it conducts heat, so you don't want any smeared onto the socket or the PCB.

 

But you want to use enough so that it's about the size of a Pea.

Cheers mate, re-applied my thermal paste like that and dropped 20c under load. Got my 8600k at 5.9GHz at 73c while gaming.
