10x Improvement in 3D printing Speeds from MIT

Standard FDM printers usually use a drive gear and an idler to feed filament through a system that uses conduction to heat up the plastic before being extruded. This is where the new technology from MIT differs, it's utilizing textured filament so that a screw mechanism can grip onto the filament and drive the filament with much greater forces without the "extruder skipping" and making use of a laser to melt this plastic, that's one issue inherent with normal conduction based heating is that there isn't enough heat transfer to have a flow rate high enough needed for fast 3d printing.

This seems like a good application of the technology, I'm not that sure what sort of medicine things require printing that fast as I've only really ever heard of the use of 3d printing using SLM or similar methods for titanium joints which this obviously isn't doing.

I've had issues in the past when printing particular materials most notably PETG, where if you try and print fast the previous layer will still be above its glass transition temperature and this makes printing complex geometries fast difficult as most of the detail will be lost to "smushing", using high fan speeds certainly helps but only to a point if the cooling rate is too high the layer bondage becomes an issue. I'm sure this is something they'll experience if they move to different materials, I don't think it actually states what material they are currently using however.

I certainly would welcome even small improvements in printing-speed, but this kind of improvement looks very nice. Will be interesting to see how quickly DIY-enthusiasts try to replicate the system!

I would much rather have higher resolution than printing speed. It's the only reason why 3D printing isn't more popular.

Where do you get that idea? I don't see people complaining that 50um resolution is too little, I see people complaining that it takes days to print something big or that reliable, good-quality printers are too expensive.

The problem with increasing the printer speeds is that quality will inevitably suffer. It's alright moving the print head around, but stopping it in the right place can be a problem, especially when it is heavy, and it looks quite heavy in the video. You can also see the machine shaking which is also not particularly good for quality.

And if they are intending it for use in medicine, the quality and strength need to be good as well as having it print fast.

Why not tackle accuracy at higher speeds next?

My understanding is that in order for them to increase accuracy at speeds, they would have to reduce the amount of weight on the carriage so there is not much momentum so it is easier to stop.

It is possible but don't lasers that are powerful enough to instantly melt plastic generate a lot of heat so would need a heavy heatsink. Then again, I'm only going off the lasers that I have seen, being MIT, they've probably developed their own light and efficient lasers

I have to agree that resolution is too poor even with the high end printers. I mean look at the quality between filament and resin printers, night and day. I rather speed up resin printing rather than filament.

I can't imagine the cooling problems; probably sounds like a jet plane taking off with the plastic cooling at that speed. Don't some things have trouble with cooling that fast, I wonder what that does to the structural integrity of the plastic.Hope this goes mainstream though.

The only reason I'm here is that I have homework that I don't want to do

3d printing has already taken on though, its not a "fad". You would be hard pressed to find any kind of business that designs and produces products that doesn't have some kind of 3d printer. They help save massive amounts of time and money when it comes to iterating designs.

3D printing isn't more popular because it takes a lot of know-how. Getting great prints with high reliability takes a LOT of work. Even if you buy a very high end printer it's not set it and forget it. Just learning the software and how the machine operates is fairly daunting, and downright frustrating for a non technically minded individual. Not to mention the actual design process for parts is a whole separate skill that is a huge time investment to learn and can never really be automated even if you had the perfect, one button printer. Resolution doesn't even crack the top 5 of what is stopping 3d printers from becoming popular.
