8th Gen CPU on 7th Gen motherboard

My friend bought a 8th gen CPU but he has a Motherboard that's says it supports 7, 6th gen processors and i'm wondering will it still work?

No 8th gen Coffee Lake will only work on 300 series chipset boards.

No it won't work. Socket is changed a bit on 8th CPU's. They require Z370 mobo.

Yes if the CPU is a 'K' model, for locked 8th gen they'll be bringing out B360 soon.

Not necessarily. You can use K CPUs in non-Z motherboards. It's a waste of money, sure, but not a requirement.

Oh no I'm not saying you can't use a locked CPU in a 'Z' board that's just 100% false, all I'm saying is for people that want to get onto the 8th gen platform but don't want to break the bank could wait for the B360 boards.

unlocked Coffee Lake CPUs are pointless as a whole... the i7 8700 and i7 8700k @5ghz are IDENTICAL outside high refresh rate 1080p gaming:

Even on professional workloads the difference is redundant... my advise is go i7 8700 on the cheapest micro-atx z370 just to OC memory...

If you're just gaming, then yes, getting an unlocked K processor is way overkill. This has held true even since Sandy Bridge which still plays games pretty well on most modern titles.

 

You buy the K processor because you want to overclock, not because you want to game.

Overclocking involves going into a BIOS setting and raising settings, including CPU multiplier, RAM multiplier, base clock, voltage, load line calibration, etc. but can only be done with certain CPUs and/or motherboards.

 

Gaming involve interacting with a game and can be done with any compatible CPU and motherboard.

This comment does not say that if you overclock, you cannot play video games. Rather, I'm saying the reason you buy a K processor is to overclock.

 

Sure, you may be buying an 8700K because it's a good gaming CPU, but that isn't your main reason for picking this CPU in particular. After all, the base i7-8700 is just as good in most benchmarks and nearly just as good in others, and it costs considerably less. It also has a lower MSRP and comes with a cooler, making it a much better value for gaming than the 8700K for most current games, often even after an aggressive 5 GHz overclock on the 8700K.

 

Why would you go for the 8700K over the 8700? Why would you buy an overpriced Z370 board with the 8700K? Why would you buy a liquid cooler or a huge air cooler? Why would you spend all this extra money on that one CPU? Because you want to overclock.
