Noctua CPU Cooler upgrade

Chuck Comet

I am going from a Noctua U9S to a D15S. Does anyone know whether the mountings are the same?  I can save some time and effort if I do not have to remove the apparatus, so I am curious to whether it's necessary. Thanks.

What's your CPU?

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

You need to delid it not buy a new cooler, the TIM is crap on it.

Buying a new cooler won't help you as much as delidding

I trust the performance of the Noctua enough to not delid. I am only OCing by utilizing XMP, so it's only going to push up to maybe 4.6 or so (if that, even). I have to admit here that the upgrade choice was also an aesthetic decision - the U9S is really small in my case.

It's really not going to be much better until you delid it. Because you need to improve how heat is pulled away from the CPU, not just putting a larger cooler. If you want truly better temps now, delid it and buy a larger cooler later.

Is it old U9B or SE version? The mounting hardware is tad different in old model, but I'm pretty sure new ones all use SecuFirm II mounts. And you only loose time if I'm wrong.

I just installed. The mounting brackets are curved differently, so I had to swap them out. That was no big deal (just do one side at a time so that the back plate doesn't fall off). This unit is MUCH better than before...
