Advertisers ditch YouTube over predatory comments on videos of kids

Serves them right: they were so focused on defending their algorithm that picked legit content they refused to manually review content that was blatantly subversive for years: It's been so long since everybody knew about the Spiderman and Elsa scam videos and no: saying that manual review is impossible won't fly when channels like this were huge money makers and blatantly controversial. Hell in most of these videos you could tell this was some sick shit just by looking at the fucking thumbnail they didn't even have to watch the videos they only needed to pay an actual motherfucking employee for some manual oversight.

 

If anything this is a huge defeat for automation so there's that as a positive side, too bad many content creators will just jump ship in the process.

"Tactic Approval". That's what most people should, rightly, assume. It's not 2010 and this is far from the first go-around with these problems. This also isn't some video with 150 views, mostly from scrape bots, that has a crime in it. Some of these videos were wracking up huge view totals and the algo could clearly find the inter-related ones. 

 

While I'm sure some of the low-level employees find it funny and/or are supportive of this mess, I highly doubt this is the goal from management. YouTube is just managed horribly and has been for years. But considering the rest of the issues Google is having, the company is going to collapse at some point. It's beyond saving at this point, though that probably means it'll be around for another 25 years.

That's fucking disgusting and proves once and for all why using algorithms to search for inapropriate content on the platform is a bad idea.

 

I hope YouTube end up explaining to a judge why they let that happen.

 

I'm getting more and more happy about the fact I have moved almost all my online viewing onto Twitch, I'm only really watching LGR, Jim Sterling & LTT videos on YouTube these days and if most of them moved elsewhere I'd drop YouTube instantly. The platform is getting more and more toxic every day.

Youtube has had no stance on not uploading cancerous videos other than having them demonetised. And still, Youtube places ads on those videos. You put 2 and 2 together and realize that Youtube is freeloading off our user made content to generate ad revenue for itself, and that they had either overpromised on their service to advertisers or that their pulling out is a false move they are using as an excuse to not pay out to content creators.

Beginning to wonder if they should just demonetize everything. Leave it as a platform for the passionate rather than the money. Let content creators get their own sponsor spots if needed. Otherwise the situation we're in now I fear is inevitable.

You can still upload them, you just won't be able to monetize them. I would watch them if you uploaded them, I love watching airsoft gameplay. Plus the content of people uploading videos for the fun of it and because they genuinely enjoy doing it tends to be better than people doing it for the money is what I've come to notice.

This video is among the mild cases but notice the date of it being published and the popularity of Ethan's video on it: There's no way they didn't know Ethan has been invited to meet Susan Wojcicki and other youtube excecs so they for sure know he exists and realize full well what he talks about.

True. I've never uploaded videos for profit, I do it because I want to. My earlier comment was more sarcastic than anything - but hey, if there are people out there that will watch them, I'll give them a try - next time I got to a big airsoft event. (I'll need to get another camera facing me and a bigger SD card  32GB fills up fast)

On Topic - this does suck though for those who make their living from YouTube. Because of the minority, the majority are being punished.

If you watch Sid Alphas video on The Adpocalypse 2.0 he shows some blurred out stills taken from a Times UK investigation into this one channel, even though I'm typing only I'm gonna put the basic info in spoilers because it's pretty disgusting...

This one channel was uploading videos of young girls, around 9 or 10, laying in bed wearing nothing but underwear and doing sexually suggestive poses and there were other users posting about how they wanted to grope these children.

That depends on what they do on YouTube for a living, I'm not aware of any airsofters that do it for a living. To my knowledge, channels like Silo Entertainent, Novritsch, House Gamers, etc go airsofting on the weekends or sometime like that and record gameplay there. Novritsch obviously gets quite a bit of profit from his SSG24 line(I personally want one for when I start airsofting haha), and they all have their various merch shops and things which help counter this problem.

 

In contrast, channels like Mumbo Jumbo, TheDiamondMinecart, FalseSymmetry, and other similar channels don't get affected by this and they all do YouTube for a living. In addition to that, a few of them all have Patreon pages and get Twitch donations but for the most part, their money comes from YouTube.

None yet - besides, I think it's against rules for self-promotion. 
I was also thinking about YouTubers in general and not just Airsofters - although a lot of people have, as you mentioned, moved over to secondary sources of funding. 
Either way - it's still a little unfair on the innocent.

Is this floatplane something I've missed? I stopped watching LTT videos because of the content quality e.g. that last console vs $500 PC which seemed like it could have been a sponsored video, was awful IMHO.
