Isn't hyperthreading and SMT enabled by changing CPU code? It's not something you have to physically add to the CPU die.

 

Not sure exactly what happened, but last time I check they did cut connections to other parts of the CPU with laser, so you wouldn't be able to just enable all the extra cores.

 

SMT requires extra hardware to work . Mainly , the scheduler and decoder need to be beefier, and the ALU needs to have enough ports.

It's actually not that much hardware though .

 

 

OP: if this is real , it's possible someone is fucking up in manufacturing , labeling cpus as different SKU's as intended

Of course that can also be easily faked, but some food for thought I suppose. Considering AMD's great yields, I wouldn't be surprised if there really was a batch of R5s and R3s that with more cores than advertised.

It's possible, but it really is just so easily faked that I wouldn't put much stock in it until I've seen someone reputable show it.

I think so, the latest posts are from Victoria or Shrek so i think it's just a handful of people working for MSI that write and maintain the blogposts.

 

There are also always a bunch of pictures of the bios and the motherboard so it seems like they are partially marketing too. Looking at the quality of the motherboard pictures it seems to be done with gear the average gamer won't have laying around.

Just to add that faking CPU-Z is hard. It has security methods to stop people from manipulating results. While I can tweak the registry to make Windows show things like this:

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

I think someone on China or such has figured out how to unlock this chips which isn't surprising. Man I'd love to gamble at turning my 1600 into an 8 core it's cheap enough that if I botch it I can just buy another one.

Remember that hyper-threading is a trademarked name from Intel for their SMT tech. For AMD, it would just be SMT unless they have a name for theirs.

Since there seems to be a relatively small performance benefit I would assume this chip has botched microcode and erroneously reports 8 cores - windows isn't bothered because it can still access 8 threads, which are in fact present.

how could there be no performance benefit? The Cinebench R15 score is more than 800 at stock 3.1GHz speed. For your reference, by 2600k overclocked to 4.5GHz scored 811.

The 2600k has a lower IPC and only has 4 cores - if this were a true 8 core at 3.1 GHz it would have smashed that result. But you're right, it did make a difference compared to a "normal" R3. It almost looks like it's a 6 core, reporting 8, when it should only have 4. Very weird.

Yea I don't buy it. Plus that Cinebench score is about stock 1500X levels. With a beefy enough OC (probably would need LN2) you could probably get a 1200 to that score with its normal core count. At best he just changed something to report incorrect core count or maybe found a way to unlock the SMT, but most likely it's completely fake. Even a stock 6c 1600 beats that score by like 300+ points.

Having issues with a Corsair AIO? Possible fix here:

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.

Anyone with a Ryzen 7 to test the authenticity of the Cinebench R15 results? Just underclock it to 3.1GHz and disable SMT. Memory frequency is unknown, so please test with 2133 and as high as you've got. Thanks!

I think there is a possibility this is true. I also wonder if there's a chance you could unlock more cores on some of these chips.... Remember the old Sempron and Athlon cpus that if you were lucky could be unlocked for more cores? :)

I believe this is AMDs intention. They have high yields so this just saves them the trouble of disabling cores to meet demand for lower end chips.

How do we get more people to buy Ryzen chips? I know since people will be deciding between X amd chip and Y intel chip why don't we also include a lottery. Have a medium to high chance to get an even better chip in disguise. This way people will be even more driven to buy the amd chip.

 

And if they don't win the lottery of getting the hidden chip then the consumer doesn't lose anything since they were originally deciding between X and Y to begin with.

 

Everybody wins. Consumers get more bang for the buck, amd gets money.

Yes but yours is still only showing 4 cores whereas mine is showing 8 in the cinebench video. I’m out of town on business at the moment but when I return in a couple days I can get it for you.
