8 core Ryzen 3

Jurrunio

First of all, this post will lack actual quotes of any article because it's not in a language I know, nor is it from a reputable source. It is interesting though.

From Youtube channel 'boxserg', seems to be Russian. It's a new account and all videos are about 1 thing: an 8 core Ryzen 3 1200.

So it seems after Ryzen 5 1600s being shipped with 8 cores and 16 threads, AMD has been kind to us once again by hiding a flagship model underneath the lid of an entry model (silicon lottery for cores, if that makes sense). It does seem to lack SMT, but that wont stop it from trailing the Ryzen 5 1600 in performance

(seriously are their production yields on Zen so good they just produce way more fully functioning modules than AMD expected?)

Must have been a great surprise to this lucky guy.

either it's a big lie or someone at the manufacturing facility's REALLY fucking up at their jobs. i'm curious as to why it doesn't have hyperthreading.

It's called SMT on AMD and not hyperthreading.

Isn't hyperthreading and SMT enabled by changing CPU code? It's not something you have to physically add to the CPU die.

Not sure exactly what happened, but last time I check they did cut connections to other parts of the CPU with laser, so you wouldn't be able to just enable all the extra cores.

Not the first 8-core 1200 to appear and there are also multiple cases of an r5 1600 unlocked to 8C/16T.

They are rare but it seems to me that AMD sometimes just doesn't even bother cutting off the extra cores and leaves them activated as a little bonus.

I mean it's so rare nobody is going to run out buying an r5 1600 with the hope it has 8 cores. it's just way too rare to hope for such thing.

But the lucky few do have a nice bonus :P

@Jurrunio

Their yields are really amazing on Zen dies. Most likely this was a working 8c part with a bad SMT on 3ish cores. I'm a little concerned that the whole "turn bits off" people are regularly screwing things up. Now, for "random lottery CPUs", that could be a fun little thing, but it's actually a little bit of a worry.

Don't think that's the case tho because all the cpu's i've seen with extra cores didn't show a sign of instability so the extra unlocked cores were actually good ones, at least that's what i've read about the few that were unlocked.

Could be coincidence but a handful of cpu's with unlocked cores and no stability issues with a single one makes me believe AMD did this actually on purpose? O_o

I mean it's positive PR, makes people happy and more people talk about it, seems like a smart move to me from AMD.

Well in this case SMT is disabled so at least you have that.

And you can always buy a ryzen 3 or 5 if you want and hope to get extra cores, but the chances for now are so small it's really unlikely. Like the amount of people that have an 8-core r3 is probably not more than a handful.

And it's not shitty QA if it's done on purpose which is actually possible because both R3's and R5's have been spotted with 8 cores.

At their last statement AMD said yields were ~ 90% working dies, probably they have too many good dies so must cut some dies to sell at a lower price. Probably the cut didn't work or if it was software disabled someone managed to enable it, similarly to the 3 core Phenoms.

AMD not requesting a takedown doesn't mean anything.

Changing the CPU name in the registry doesn't change performance though.

There have been people on the AMD subreddit reporting 8 core R5s and a few with 8 core R3s and confirmed it with benchmarks. I don't think it's fake, but I understand the skepticism.

No, but if you use an r7 1700 and change its name to an r3 1200, then you'll have an r3 with r7 performance.

I don't know what's going on with the formatting, it's also a bit weird on desktop but it is on msi.com which is their official website.

It's a blogpost btw, an overview of them can be found here: https://www.msi.com/Blogs
