Best graphics card for 1440p 144hz

Hello all! I was wondering what is the best gpu for 1440p 144hz gaming, I'm currently at a 1070 and I wasn't sure if I needed to upgrade or stay with my card? Thank you for your time!

I'll suggest a 1080ti if you play mostly graphically demanding games (you might still need to drop some setting to hit consistent 144Hz).

And stick with the 1070 if you mostly play less demanding or e-sports titles.

The 1070 still does well for obtaining over 100fps in most AAA games, maybey a bit lower in more demanding titles. For a decent upgrade to achieve your desired 144 fps, a 1080 will do the job, even a 1080ti if you can afford it.

The quad-core i5's have been and still are some of the best gaming CPU's out there if we're just talking about pure FPS, so tentatively no the 4690k won't bottleneck. That said, I would recommend an upgrade if you plan to get a 1080ti. You should probably move to an i5-8600k or i5-8400 if you ever get the money for it. So I would get a 1080 and leave the rest of your cash for a Coffee Lake upgrade down the road.

edit: dumbass me forgot to include a reason why I suggest a coffee lake upgrade. well, it's simple: mutlithreaded work. If you ever plan to stream, you will assuredly find that your i5 will not be enough. That's why I recommend the 8600k, you get 2 extra cores which will help in streaming, or if you edit videos, your render times will be significantly reduced.

In that case, you might just want to get a 1080ti. I think I was also a little mistaken. A 1080 cannot really deliver a solid 1440p 144hz experience in most graphically demanding games, but then again that also depends on what kind of games you are playing. If you play mostly esports games like cs:go or overwatch, a 1080 will be more than enough. If you play games like battlefield 1, gta v, doom, pubg, etc,  you will probably want a 1080ti. If you don't plan to stream ever then your i5 will probably still be ok, but I'd still try to get some upgrade when you get the chance. Haswell is dying.

I just came from a dual GTX 970 SLI setup (a tad faster than a GTX 1070 when I was overclocking).  Majority of my games ran great, in the 100fps+ for most FPS games (BF1, Destiny 2, DOOM).  More demanding titles sit more around the 60 fps mark, which depending on the game isn't a bad thing.

My SLI setup started having issues and I just moved to a 1080ti.  Definitely gets the job done, getting 200 fps in DOOM and anywhere from 100fps to 160 fps in Destiny 2 (game varies a lot depending on what is on screen).

Having moved from something akin to a 1070 and moving up to a 1080ti, I would make the argument that the 1070 would probably serve you well if you're willing to turn down a setting here and there if you absolutely want to hit that 144 Hz mark, but it plays most games very comfortably at 1440p and well enough to make use of a 144 Hz monitor.  Of course everything higher than that, 1070ti, 1080 or 1080ti will be better, but it just comes down to how much money you want to spend.

I would urge you to try it out with your 1070.  If you're unhappy with how that's performing, then start considering an upgrade path, whether that's another GPU for an SLI setup, or a single more powerful card.

Cheers!
