IMO, this is a problem with the provincial government, Foxconn, the school and Apple (and other companies relying on Foxconn), in that order...  It sounds like the government issues these kind of decisions to carry favor and keep the Foxconn factories thriving, which then necessitates the schools to follow through with the governments orders, however the government would probably not be quite as strong arm in this if Apple and the other companies that rely on Foxconn products were to be more diligent about ensuring these practices don't happen and swap vendors when they do...

Realistically does Apple even have the option of another vendor that can work at the speed and scale required???

They could easily work towards manufacturing solely in the US and EU, and be at full speed and scale in a few short years, but that'd cut into their profit margins too much.

It's alright everyone, the Chinese government has undertaken a full investigation and the students were totally there on their own volition and weren't threatened with not passing  if they didn't do it.

You're right.  I really shouldn't have had the audacity to be sarcastic when it comes to something as altruistic and honest as the Chinese government.  xD

They also said they were compensated appropriately. So it's possible they were paid for their overtime hours even though they weren't supposed to be able to work those overtime hours.

Quote

Apple said an audit has turned up “instances of student interns working overtime at a supplier facility in China”, adding “we’ve confirmed the students worked voluntarily, were compensated and provided benefits, but they should not have been allowed to work overtime”.

Foxconn said that “all work was voluntary and compensated appropriately, [but] the interns did work overtime in violation of our policy” prohibiting student interns working more than 40 hours a week.

I could see it going either way. Let's assume everyone is telling the truth and they weren't forced (because that would cause a bunch of other problems), at least in my mind, the wording makes it seem that they were able to get around the hour-limit restriction and were being paid for those overtime hours.

Foxconn seems to literally get away with murder at every turn.

Bear in mind that the overtime was voluntary. They were not forced to work that many hours, legal or not(and it wasn't).

Spoiler

During the course of a recent audit, we discovered instances of student interns working overtime at a supplier facility in China. We've confirmed the students worked voluntarily, were compensated, and provided benefits, but they should not have been allowed to work overtime.

Why does a school require work experience like this? Shouldn't they be doing something in retail, hospice, or medical fields?

it states "high school".

if you were doing computing would you want to do work experience in an unrelated field?

I'm aware and it's what I'm referring to. Why are they doing something like this when it isn't part of their career path?
