Which Laptop?

Slottr

To start, yes I did post this yesterday but Im hoping for more input from more people.

What laptop should I pull the trigger on?

The XPS 15 system has an i5 7300HQ, GTX 1050, 256GB SSD and 8GB of ram - $1650 PRODUCT PAGE

The vivobook pro has a i7 7700HQ, GTX 1050, 512GB SSD, and 16GB of ram. $1450 PRODUCT PAGE

Obviously the vivobook is better spec wise, but reading reviews apparently the battery is shite. Would it be better to go with the XPS or asus machine?

Are there any issues with the asus system (aside from the battery)?  should I stay away from it? I've had two dell laptops in the past and theyve all treated me great. Will the vivobook do the same?

ASUS is notorious for having high spec machines that perform well. What exactly do you need it for?

Lightly playing games like civ, cities skylines, stardew valley in my off time between classes.

edit: Stardew, civ, skylines, witcher 3, fallout, etc. Full spectrum of games.

I dont want to make this more complicated for you. But at this price you should get a custom laptop. I don't know any companies in Canada but in the UK we have sites like PCspecialist. My advice would be to find the equivalent and get them to build and test the laptop for you. Alternatively I personally have used MSI laptops before and liked them. The xps 15 was the first laptop I bought with my own money IT SUCKED! the screen had weird flickering issues and the HDD died within 4 months and I had to get a refund. Not sure how much it has improved since 2013 but I wouldn't buy one

I dislike MacOS and as Khakihat said, they are incredibly more expensive than what I have listed.

You can get a 1500 macbook with a i5 and get the same results FPS wise as the i5 XPS.All of the games you listed are incredibly CPU heavy and unless your hitting 4k the 1050's not even going to go past 30-50 precent

Perhaps on the odd day I do want to play something like the Witcher though. I should have mentioned that in the previous reply, my bad..

But in means for spec over cost.. there are better options than a MacBook. MacBooks are elegant looking machines though. Very aesthetically pleasing.

if he's just playing City Skylines then he'll be getting about the same FPS.Now that the Witcher is in the mix there really isn't any competition

WAIT FOR BLACK FRIDAY and snag the XPS 15 system with an i7-7700HQ, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD instead.

http://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/dell-laptops-netbooks-and-tablets/xps-15/spd/xps-15-9560-laptop/nxps159560_bt_s1608e

I'm biased here, as I own and LOVE my XPS 15. Bought the exact same model linked above for $1989 in the summer, so yeah I'm a bit choked I could have saved another $200, but I love it too much to care. The battery life as I sit here web browsing in Starbucks at half brightness on battery saver mode has gone down only 5% in about an hour, and you'll get double whatever the ASUS laptop will give you because it only has a 3-cell 47WHr battery as opposed to Dell's 97WHr battery.

Don't get me wrong - I do like ASUS products too, but given the choice I'd take the XPS 15 everytime. More importantly though, what do you plan to use the laptop for, aside from the few games? Also, no MacBook "Pro" will have any standard ports, so you'll need to carry a bag of dongles around with you if you need to plug anything in, including even an SD card from a digital camera. If that doesn't matter to you, then there are configurations of the MacBook "Pro" that may also fit your needs in the higher end of the spectrum.

Desktop: KiRaShi-Intel-2022 (i5-12600K, RTX2060) Mobile: OnePlus 5T | Koodo - 75GB Data + Data Rollover for $45/month
Laptop: Dell XPS 15 9560 (the real 15" MacBook Pro that Apple didn't make) Tablet: iPad Mini 5 | Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 10.1
Camera: Canon M6 Mark II | Canon Rebel T1i (500D) | Canon SX280 | Panasonic TS20D Music: Spotify Premium (CIRCA '08)

Oh right, my bad. I forgot the Black Friday link... ahem https://www.redflagdeals.com/black-friday/dell-black-friday-deals-flyers/

It's on page 2, product letter C. It's not the 4K touch model, which is fine for my needs and actually gives you more battery life. Until software developers implement proper DPI scaling for all UI elements, 4K isn't really for mainstream use. However, if you're doing heavy photography work or need a thin / light video editing laptop for 4K content, then by all means take a look at the 4K models.
