Will using a 4k display for 1080p gaming look ugly ?

Hello, I would very much like to upgrade my current display to a 4k screen for general use, but I don't have the graphical horsepower to play games at 4K properly.

 

Does 1080p on a 4k screen look bad ?

It should, but I've read that it doesn't.  I've got no way to verify that though.

No, it will lost almost identical to 1080p on a 1080p screen.

4k (3840 × 2160) is exactly 4 times 1080p (1920x1080), so if your monitor scales properly there shouldn't be any difference between that 4k monitor and a 1080p one as it can use four pixels of the 4k panel to match one of the 1080p in the source. Some TV's do upscaling and instead of having those 4 pixels showing the same thing they do some processing to smooth the image.

No point in buying into G-sync, especially when you need to upgrade your GPU for 4k. Wait for Navi next year, the cheapest one here will be fine, the 68-W is an upgrade, probably worth it if you're in it for the long haul, both are free-sync will work fine on your GPU. All are IPS

The G-sync one is $999 lol, RIP, at least Navi should be pretty good next year

I have a 4k monitor and awhile back, my GPU couldn't run some games at 4k, so I went down to 1080p and yes it looked ugly, but it was somewhat playable, very pixily for sure

That really doesn't make much sense. I've been running AMD cards without issue for years now. Do you have a more objective reason not to use AMD when it saves you like $500 on the display?

I know and I fully support AMD when I make recommendations, I know it isn't rational. Besides, I don't think I'll be getting a new display anytime soon after all.

Well, dunno when you'll get back around to upgrading then, but Navi should be out by then so you can properly power the 4k display in any event.
