Is DisplayPort dependent on the cable?

D13H4RD

I know, odd question, but hear me out.

Some of you might know that I just bought a new monitor, a 25" Samsung SHG50 144Hz 1ms FreeSync TN monitor to replace an old SyncMaster which finally breathed its last breath before going up in flames after 9 hard years. I initially was going to get the ViewSonic XG2401 but I stumbled across this and it looked to be a decent offering for a very reasonable price (it was $100 off).

I bought a MiniDP-to-DP cable along with the monitor and set it up after rearranging my room for more space.

However, when using DP, I noticed that many of the monitor settings are locked out. I grabbed a spare HDMI cable and connected it to the second HDMI port which supports 1080p144. After doing so, all of the monitor's settings are available.

What's the reasoning?

What sorts of settings?

Feature support does not depend on the DP cable, any cable will be the same.

Refresh rate and even brightness.

Using HDMI gave me all the settings but DP doesn't.

Refresh Rate
Change the screen refresh rate. A higher refresh rate can reduce eye strain.
• DisplayPort : 60 Hz / 100 Hz / 120 Hz / 144 Hz
• HDMI1 : 60 Hz / 100 Hz / 120 Hz
• HDMI2 : 60 Hz / 100 Hz / 120 Hz / 144 Hz
• DisplayPort : 60 Hz / 100 Hz / 120 Hz / 144 Hz
• HDMI1 : 60 Hz
• HDMI2 : 60 Hz / 100 Hz / 120 Hz / 144 Hz
― This menu is not available when FreeSync is set to Standard Engine or Ultimate Engine mode.
― Changing the Refresh Rate may cause screen flickering, depending on the computer's graphics card.
― The function is available in a computer equipped with the graphic card that can change the refresh rate.
It is unavailable in the devices (e.g. AV devices) with fixed refresh rates. If the function is applied, the screen
may have malfunction.

Response Time
Accelerate the panel response rate to make video appear more vivid and natural.
― It is best to set Response Time to Standard or Faster when you are not viewing a movie.
― This menu is not available when FreeSync is set to Standard Engine or Ultimate Engine mode

Black Equalizer
Adjust the brightness of the dark areas.
As the value gets closer to 1, the darker areas of the screen become brighter, making it easier to find
enemies when playing a game. To find enemies more easily during a game, use a lower value.
As the value gets closer to 20, the darker areas of the screen become darker and the contrast increases.
― This menu is not available when Eye Saver Mode is enabled.
― This menu is not available when SAMSUNG
MAGICAngle is enabled.
― This menu is not available when Picture Mode is set to Cinema mode.

Some of the menus are disabled when certain settings are turned on. Having DP connected may automatically enable things that disable menus, so you can try turning them off and see if the menus come back.

I did try. Doesn't seem to have made much of a diff

I'll try with an old MacBook Pro.

UPDATE: Same thing

Seems that under DP, it defaults to a universal setting.

Don't know why bit perhaps it's to do with laptop limitations?
