Need Help with finding a new monitor

bman7842

When I originally got my pc I viewed my monitor as one of the corner cutting areas of the build and not very important. The fact of the matter is, since I have upgraded my graphics card the next reasonable thing would be to update the display it is connected to. My current display is a cheap dell 21" 1600x900p display. It gets the job done but color is very faded, blacks are awful and the res isn't the best but not a huge bother. I find when searching through monitors it is very difficult for me to find one that I like. When purchasing a monitor I'm more interested in the overall picture, not so much the response time. 1ms response time is great but tbh I likely wouldn't notice 30ms. 1440p would also be nice but once again completely fine with 1080p. 60hz is really all I need as well, but something like 144hz would be great to. What I'm trying to say is, all other features of the monitor should be unimportant compared to the actually image the display produces. I find extremely expensive monitors on amazon and newegg labeled for gaming that just seem excessive in my case. I look for monitors in the $200-300 (that doesn't mean you can't go cheaper :D) max price point, and at this category there are so many different types of options and it is so difficult to look through and get a good idea on what is best. That's why I'm looking for opinions and feedback on this thread to hopefully give me a better idea of what's on the market with the features I find important.

What are you using your monitor for? Is that US then?

Really I'd just get a 4k 60hz IPS display and call it a day

This one's under $300 at B&H

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Yup US and mainly gaming

What CPU/GPU then? You can always run games at 1080p scaled perfectly to the display in any event.

Then ya, just run most games at 1080p full screen until next generation GPUs are out and 1080ti performance is around $500 or less.

That display is free-sync so probably look out for Navi to make use of it.

Just look for some more reviews or something, but it should be fine, the newer/improved models are around $500

I only look below when purchasing new monitor.

  • IPS or VA panel only
  • 24" for 16:9 ratio - 1080p
  • 27" for 16:9 ratio - 1080p or 1440p
  • 32" for 16:9 ratio - 1440p
  • 29" for 21:9 ratio - 1080p
  • 34" for 21:9 ratio - 1080p or 1440p
  • 8 bit panel or higher. (6 bit + HRC is ok)
  • 100hz and above (you will notice differences and more enjoy on gaming) - go for 60hz if budget issue.

What i don't care much / won't buy

  • Respond time (5ms is far than enough, 1ms is not necessary, input lag is much important but a lot monitor never mentioned it)
  • G-Sync or FreeSync
  • 2160p resolution (unless I go for 43" because I prefer 100% scaling in Windows as more than 100% scaling in Windows suck where some apps is not compatible.)
  • TN panel (Normatter how expensive TN panel are, it still not my type preferable quality output because it still look bad to me)
