AluminiumTech's Device OS Support List

AlTech

Hi all,

This Thread is dedicated to showing Eligibility for Devices to receive OS Updates. This will focus primarily on IOS and Android although Tizen may be added if there is enough interest.

I will try to add popular mainstream devices like Samsung, HTC, etc. If there's a phone that isn't on here that you think should be on here then please leave a comment and I'll try to address it.

Thanks to @Ryan_Vickers for giving me the idea to make this thread.

Notes - This refers to Official Support only. Unofficial support may continue on Android Devices past the OEM's official End of OS Support Date.

This only refers to OS Updates and not Security Updates.

Disclaimer: It is entirely possible that this may be incorrect. I have no way of knowing 100% for sure but following patterns identifiers in how OEMs update devices, predicting support can be done somewhat reliably.

Color coding:

Good list, I think this could be quite useful for people wondering what kind of support they can expect from new devices, and/or how current ones will stand up

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Galaxy S8+ here, my Galaxy S6 got 2 major updates from what it shipped with. I expect the same out of my S8+ but hopefully it ages better.

In 2019, it's possible I might switch back to Apple if they still have the home button, although I could maybe live with a gesture or whatever they might have by then. iOS kinda got shitty for awhile and now it's getting good again imo

Honestly, only 2 Major Updates is disappointing. Especially for those who buy used or refurb devices.

It effectively forces people who buy used or refurb to go out and get AOSP or Lineage OS ROMs for their device.

Having an old version of Android is not that bad, as long as you still get security patches for your phone.

But it's just not good enough in a world where iPhones get 3-4 Major OS Updates within the devices lifecycle with an additional 10-20 minor updates.

The iPad Retina (early 2012, A5X) didn't get iOS 10. It stopped with all A5 devices at 9.3.x ;)

I'm massively revamping this thread instead of making a new because it makes more sense to keep this one. I'll be slowly adding other devices and also cleaning up the current list to be easier to read.
