10-year old son can unlock mom’s iPhone X using FaceID

I also would like ask why Linus called iOS 11 awesome on a WAN  show episode when in fact iOS 11 is the buggiest iOS release ever. Way buggier than iOS 7 when it launched.

But I think this is fixed now by Google

I've still yet to run into any iOS 11 bugs. So it's possible he didn't either.

Although its not like a plasma, it is like a CRT. Both have phosphors that "wear out" over time. Using the pixel causes it to slowly dim.

But it's not caused by "displaying stuff in the same place" is what I'm getting at, it is simply caused by the phone screen being on at all, you can slow the process by using less brightness when possible but that's limited at best

Not really getting on the merit, it was just funny that something that does sound so superior would have such Achilles' heel.

And its a shame too. I like the image quality on my phone but I've pretty badly burned in my keyboard and telegram into the display, owning the phone for only a couple months.

That does suck, damn... really had no idea, funny quality improves but it does seem that whatever improvements we get we're still bond to a considerable short life expectancy from certain devices.... sometimes for "silly" reasons.

My criticisms to iOS 11.1 at the moment:

  • Battery drain which I didn’t noticed with iOS 10.3.3. It still persists in iOS 11.1.
  • Awful notification center. Android is simply better in handling notifications as they’re grouped on a per app basis and not chronological and it can be dismissed by swiping instead of hitting that dinky “x” sign.
  • Dinky music playback controls on control center that requires a long press

I haven't noticed any meaningful battery life differences. Notifications center has definitely gotten worse, but it was also worse in iOS 10, although I wouldn't call that a bug -- just a poor design choice. I actually really like the way music is handled in control center now.

I don’t even have big hands and I often hit pause when I’m trying to skip a track.

I don’t even have big hands and I often hit pause when I’m trying to skip a track.

My hands are on the bigger side and never once have I managed to do that :S

My only problem with iOS 11 is that they added a lot of white space in Settings and the App store -- but both are pretty minor issues. Oh, and notification center -- not a fan.

I wish people didn't replace their phones every year

I'm still using my iPhone 5 and will continue to use it until it no longer functions, i do understand the temptation though, when you sit down at a cafe for a coffee with friends and they all have new phones and you're rockin a 5 year old model it feels a little bit shitty.  On the plus side though many of my friends are always living paycheck to paycheck and my savings account never goes under 5k, i feel safe in that when/if a major appliance breaks down i can just buy another one for cash, i don't have a credit card and never get caught by surprise.

I tend to upgrade frequently, but it's not because of anyone around me, it's always because there is some very compelling reason. I started with a Droid X and then 4G came around about 8 months later so I stepped up to an HTC Thunderbolt, then the battery life and performance just became abysmal so I upgraded to a Razr Maxx after about a year, after another year and a half I had to root and overclock the CPU but it was still very slow and I wouldn't get half the texts, so I upgraded to a 5s and kept that for two years before upgrading to a 6s+ for the bigger screen, and then after another two years upgrading to the X to have that bigger screen in a smaller body. I would've stuck with my 6s+ as it still is perfectly good had it not been for the X.

who would knock out someone in a crowded bus or train?

Someone who wants a $1000 phone for free? In the same amount of time it takes someone to react to what just happened to you, said person could cut your fingers or even hand off...

For me my phones password is 6 long, but i usually use the fingerprint option on the back but i do it so fast and a way no one would know which finger or position esp with the far better senser my Stylo 3 has compared to the 2 which would actually decline and lock me out... Same thing with my pin if i was to use it i enter it inside of 1 second, so unless the person beside me is Ben Gates I'm not worried.

Is finger and facial recognition safe? No, no it is not. in the other topic i said use tech you trust, i trust finger far better than face someone with a iphone X could take a great picture of you from afar and steal your X and gain access to it. How is that safe?

2D images don’t work with the iPhone X’s Face ID.

"You know doctor, I could have sworn I had ten fingers before my iPhone got stolen."

I don't think most common thieves would lop off a finger just for a shiny brick. On the other hand, the value of said brick is easily inconsequential if the information is valuable enough to elicit dismembering a digit to get at it.

One can make a 3D model out of 2D. while that wouldn't be profitable way one could try printing the 2D image in a way to mimic your face. Not sure if someone has tried this or not

Thats actually all these guys did lol... Took a picture and plastered it onto a mask xD

No but when the original iPhone came out people died because of it...  So it is still possible esp if you look and act the high end part...

Yeah, I think you should move if that's a risk in your area. Then again, if you can afford an iPhone X it seems unlikely that you live in an area where people cut off hands. With that being said: unless you have inside access, you're looking at a paperweight since every device sold today has a kill switch.

In other news...

ITT: people who don't know enough about OLED.

Yes, there are still issues but some in this thread have regurgitated OLED facts from 5 years ago. Lower efficiency than LCD? Come on. It's been tested and modern OLED have much better efficiency today especially overall. There are still yield and QC issues resulting in displays dying early but most displays will slowly die over the years and can therefore be managed in software. We're talking dimming over time. I'd wager in most cases your battery dies before your display. So what do we have left? Image retention and burn-in. Real issues that are lesser than they were but still common enough to be unacceptable. That's honestly the only one I'll concede besides the QC problem.

I should note that OLED is not necessary for bezel-less displays. It certainly helps but phones like the Essential PH-1 is using LCD. So is the Mi Mix (the first device with that type of design). And the upcoming HTC phone. LG G6 too. In fact there might almost be more LCD devices than OLED with the design.

It's not an excuse by any means, I absoloutely hate apple products and refuse to offer support to family members that have them... BUT, pretty much most companies at this point treats customers as unpaid beta testers of their products. I definitely would NOT pay anywhere close to $1000 to be one though.

Damn I remember that on tube TVs, couldn't have static images on it for too long or else it could get stuck on the screen for good.

I really had no idea that OLED had this issue... I have never really paid much attention to this technology as I'm happy with any IPS panel already but we often see Linus and other big deal folk praising OLED for its magnificence and I do must say it is a bloody irony that it suffers from such an oldschool issue.

Well, it’s been a problem ever since OLED was a thing.

The problem is to do with the organic compounds. Over time, they break down and degrade, losing their luminance. Modern OLEDs don’t do so as quickly, but they still degrade over time. This is made worse when you have heaps of static on-screen elements and when you crank up the brightness.

you know, I used to hate blackberries because it's way too overkill, and then iphones for the same reason, and then android phones because they're too complicated in the other direction, all the time while using a nokia microbrick waaay past it being cool... (I was still using it as a phone past 2015)

I properly use an iPhone now. and have to be tech support to my parents who owns both iOS and android devices, despite not being an android native.

I've been using Android phones since about the beginning, 2007 IIRC, and haven't looked back. I have multiple reasons for not liking apple products, not least of which is them being so locked down and non-flexible.. it's especially annoying when there's a problem with an app freezing or something, you have to restart the device (unless I missed something?), whereas with android you can usually just kill the running process and restart the app. That is the main one for me, I hate having to restart devices. I already told my sisters and brothers that they're on their own from now on with the apple stuff they have, have spent too long having to figure out how to do stuff that's common sense for me with android... and yes it is probably just being used to the ecosystem and would be similar for IOS users trying to figure out android.

Yes I am an Android fanboy - I have phones, tablets, tv boxes and even a chromecast, although I don't use the chromecast as I found it was crap :D

oh, app manager (double-home button) and swipe app vertically away to quit the frontend. usually would stop the app minus the notification service

the strangest problem I ever had (still yet unsolved but maybe because it was an ancient device not compatible with recent versions of android (or maybe because freaking chinese-company-flavoured android)) was the google add-in language keyboard crashes. Had to turn off in settings to regain control of the default keyboard. reinstalling the keyboard app would only kick the problem down the calendar ._.

Ahh cool, at least I can pass that info on about killing apps in ios, thanks :)

With most android apps, you can always find an alternative... for example the keyboard app you mentioned, you can get many many keyboard apps, for example switkey. I have been using swiftkey since around when it came out many years ago now, and I bought the premium version, which to this day I still use on all my android devices and they all get the updates. It was also very inexpensive for the amount of years and devices I have used it on. It's a prime example of a better way of paying for stuff, no having to pay for updated versions, or for only one device etc, you pay once and can use everywhere with all updated versions free too.

Also, you can mix and match apps with most things, you can have a default app (can also be changed)  and yet still use other apps one time without having to make it your default too.

IPS LCD may not have the same deep blacks and high contrast of OLED but IPS LCD lasts longer.

I think Apple was simply testing out the waters of OLED with the iPhone X but who knows? Maybe Apple’s own color calibration would keep the OLED display last longer. ??‍♂️

That may be true but generally with a good OLED display you're looking at a few years before burn in really starts making a difference. IMO as long as you're waiting a few years for burn in the colors are worth the trade off. That's just my opinion though, yours might be different.

Also you have to remember that if Apple went with an LCD panel they would have larger bezels. Maybe a chin on the bottom like the essential phone.

12 hours ago, iamdarkyoshi said:

Burn in. OLEDs burn in like CRTs did when displaying stuff in the same place. And displaying stuff in the same place is what phones do.

That is true, though for me the risks are worth the trade off.

You can still do a notch on the LCD as evidence by the essential phone, it's just that you're gonna have more bezel, such as a larger notch or a chin.

Burn in for me isn't a big deal if it's a few years before it starts coming around, but that's just me.

OLED is more efficient when there is a lot of black on the screen, which isn't always the case -- and certainly isn't the case in iOS, which is mostly white. Although, with that said, I haven't noticed much of a difference in battery life between my X and 6s+.
