Buying stuff for black friday

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

Hi there! So, my PC has a problem with the CPU, motherboard, and RAM. However, since I'm operating on the FX platform, and want to upgrade to something newer, I'm just going to drop this platform and move to something newer. Now, since black Friday coming up, and I'm not sure what's going to be cheaper at that time, I just want to ask; what do you guys think will be the platform that makes the most sense around that time; bear in mind that this system is a gaming system running a 970, and won't really need to do anything more than that, other than the machine learning stuff I'm starting to get into. I want a low price, but great performance. I was looking at ryzen 3/5 and intel i5 on z270, but I'm not sure. What do you guys think? Thanks!

Ryzen will have the best sales if you're going higher end.

Don't get 7th gen Intel products, they're not worth it.

Would you think he could get a skylake i5 for a good price?

i5 6500 or something? Unless you believe Ryzen 5 1600 is a better P2P for gaming.

No. It's not like retailers bulk buy these things and then have to get rid of them. Supply is almost always very close to demand. It'd have to be cheaper than $110 to be worth buying, and no company is going to sell their product at that much of a loss.

For 1080p60 gaming I'd go with an i3 8100.

That sounds about right.

I keep forgetting about i3 and pentiums.
They're way under rated.

Aye, especially since the new i3 performs as well as, if not better than the i5 7500.

That's news to me. I've been out of it since skylake released, and vaguely heard the lake after that one was jokingly better than the 6k series processors.

After that I heard Pentiums got, or are going to get hyperthreading to retaliate ryzen's core counts. 100 dollar zen 3 with true quad cores? Yeah, intel had to do SOMETHING.

Haha yeah. The i3 is now a true quad core, and as much as others lament it I still think it's the best budget CPU for gaming.

The Pentium did get hyperthreading, and is a beast, but it's reserved for really budget systems.

The true crown are the new i5s.

Did the i5s get anything higher than 4 cores? (True quads, and dual hyper threads are all I remember)

They're now 6 cores. No Hyperthreading but they still beat the Ryzen 5 chips when gaming.

Yes the new i3 8100 performs somewhat between the old i5 7400 and i5 7500 when we finally have h310 boards at the market going for 40 dollars that will be the new gaming King on a tight budget.

Much closer to the 7500, but yeah it's crazy the performance we're getting at such low prices now! My buddy bought an i3 for his beast rig until the 8700k is available, I'll probably grab it off him once he buys the i7.

Tell me about it! Finally AMD forced Intel being good again xD

I managed to sell my old kit Asus h100m-C + i7 6700 + 8gb Corsair Value Select 2133mhz ram at last and I couldn't hold myself but pull the trigger on the i7 8700k, been loving it so far! But as I know myself I can see myself reselling it next year for Ice Lake all the same... sucks having only 2 hobbies in life, ponies and pcs xD

I can't wait to see what the next couple years are like. Optane, Ryzen, HDR (though the new Monoprice monitor has me thinking I'll go AMD, 4k HDR at $399) tons of goodies that need to drop in price!

Nice! That must be a beast of a system. Ice Lake will be interesting for sure. Luckily I'm getting a budget rig now, and buying a beast when I move back to the coast. Those are two good hobbies to have...real ponies? Or only MLP? xD:ph34r:

I'd have to go Z370, as Coffee Lake is such an enormous step up with the i5/i7 becoming hexacore and the i3 quadcore. Get one of the unlocked ones plus fast DDR4 if you're into emulation, as Cemu and RPCS3 love clockspeed and fast RAM.

I don't like real ones as much as my little ones xD but both! My family works with coffee cultivation and we have a neat farm really close to the town I go there on weekends, we have all kind of animals in there, pigs, horses, ponies, sheeps, cows, dogs ^^

What! Baby pigs? They're so cute! Do you have goats? Pygmy goats are awesome! I also love cows. They seem so friendly. Like a mother. Do you also have amazing coffee?

For 1080p60 gaming I'd go with an i3 8100.

I have 3 monitors, but when gaming @1080p60, I only run the game on one of the monitors. Do you think an i3 8100's good for that? Or is there a better option.

Which one of them would you reccomend for a gaming rig(1080p60) with 3 monitors for programming and such. Programming isn't too intensive, so yeah. I want to hear what you think.

Do you do anything other than gaming? Like video work, etc?

What's your budget?

I might do video work in the future, but I definitely will be doing AI work on it soon enough. That, I think's about as intensive as video editing. So, for all intensive purposes, yes, I'm doing video work. Also, there's no budget. I just want it as cheap as possible. Again, I was looking at ryzen 5 or i5 for the 6 cores.

You're so lucky!

Throw the prospect of cute animals out there and it'll happen every time :P

Hmmm. Intel and Ryzen are equal for your programs in terms of performance?

If so, then I'd go with the 1700x. It's going on sale for $279 on Black Friday at NewEgg.

https://www.bfads.net/stores/newegg/ads/black-friday/page-5#viewer

They have an X370 motherboard on the next page for $80. NCIX might have better sales on motherboards though, NewEgg doesn't seem to have much on sale in regards to that.

From a cost perspective that'd be a better choice I think. $70 more than the i5 for 2.5x the number of threads.
