YouTube has announced a clampdown on disturbing and inappropriate children’s videos, following accusations that the site enabled “infrastructural violence” through the long-run effects of its content recommendation system.

The new policy, announced on Thursday evening, will see age restrictions apply on content featuring “inappropriate use of family entertainment characters” like unofficial videos depicting Peppa Pig “basically tortured” at the dentist. The company already had a policy that rendered such videos ineligible for advertising revenue, in the hope that doing would reduce the motivation to create them in the first place.

“Earlier this year, we updated our policies to make content featuring inappropriate use of family entertainment characters ineligible for monetisation,” said Juniper Downs, YouTube’s director of policy. “We’re in the process of implementing a new policy that age restricts this content in the YouTube main app when flagged. Age-restricted content is automatically not allowed in YouTube Kids. The YouTube team is made up of parents who are committed to improving our apps and getting this right.”

 

But for the age restrictions to apply, the content does first have to be flagged for review by a normal user.

For more info check out /r Elsagate.Youtube is full of disturbing content "for kids" that has tens, if not hundreds, of millions of views.They all have similar thumbnails and are very similar (a lot of crying noises for example).These videos are easy to stumble upon once you enter the "for kids" territory on YT.

WTF Is "dark kids videos"? More violent than Tom & Jerry? That's the most violent cartoon I can think I watched growing up.

not violent, but i've seen some cartoons with pretty creepy shit like courage the cowardly dog before

well makese sense, this is one of the few chages to YT i dont instantly hate tbh

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

I've seen it, I have no idea what's going on in it (but it's still on the same level of...weirdness as SpongeBob).The videos I've mentioned are far weirder than those two(at least to me).

Youtube Kids exists for a reason also safe content filters exists.

Unless this only applies to Youtube Kids, which I think it does, but still.

Well younger ones as in ones that their child(ren) were born in the last 11 years are on average aren't the best at what they do stares at the parents giving their 3 year old or some shit mommy or daddy's iPhone.

The average parent is not educated or involved in technology and their children use...

 

The only thing on YouTube I let my kid watch is LTT and JayzTwoCents. And it's always supervised anyways...

 

Why do parents not supervise their children on-line activity? Not saying to do, but technology shouldn't be behind closed doors for children.

It is, it's pretty much unavoidable.  You can manually block channels once you find one, but there's thousands of channels of this crap out there.

Even if they do, these videos pop up and auto-play in the suggested/related videos for just about anything that would be perfectly reasonable to put on for them.  Those 

 

So let's say you set the kid up with some episodes of PJ Masks or Paw Patrol or whatever their current favorite show is this quarter.  Or a bunch of the music from Frozen.  Or some garbage-but-harmless surprise eggs/toy review videos.  Basically things that would be perfectly reasonable for them to watch so they'll be placated in the car.  There's a solid chance this crap is gonna either start playing on its own, or they're gonna tap on it from the suggested videos list when they see the thumbnail of a bunch of their favorite characters.

 

So you put on a 20 minute episode of something appropriate for your 3-4 year old, you start driving, and 10 minutes in they switch it to one of these videos because they saw Spiderman and Elsa in the thumbnail.  You might have assumed nothing bad would show up since they are using the Youtube Kids app and have all of the parental controls turned on.

Its a good move. i know it can seem a bit frustrating for certain content that seem fair , but this will hit hard on those ones that prey on the specifics & associated shock value to keep things interesting to a an certain age group, just to receive view points & gain ad revenue .
