Not bad but I expected more.

To be honest polaris was so power hungry it wouldn't surprise me if it had hbm for it since hbm is a lot more power efficient then traditional ddr5.

Underclocking is mandatory, just like how Nvidia did it to GTX 1080 mobile's core so it's only as fast as desktop 1070. Not surprised to see HBM since that's a big selling point, surprised to see Polaris rather than Vega.

Yeah but when they tried to add polaris to laptops it was a huge bust due to power draw from what I remember it could also be that AMD partnered with intel to take away more from Nvida all while keeping Vega to their own laptops.

polaris and vega are not power hungry, unless you OC them to the max.

It doesn't say that HBM2 is only for VEGA and not Polaris. Heck Polaris can even have stone age EDO ram if they want to go that route.

Most of the benchmark leaks are from a while ago, so the performance could even have improved since. (We don't know exactly what the driver base is.) I would expect it to be slightly below the MX150 generally, but not by a lot in the mobile alignment. The NUC version is a different story.

Exactly.  They just happen to come out of the box OC'd pretty hard (and running way too much voltage).

 

All those Cryptocurrency miners seemed to be rather enjoying how power efficient the RX470/480 were once tuned properly.

Polaris is so damn efficient that it throws Nvidia to shame. The only power issue it has is around OC to make it as powerful as Nvidia desktop parts. If you keep those chips in their efficiency range, they have a great perf/watt ratio.

They wouldn't have to completely redo it. They already have an hbm2 memory controller in Vega; I'd imagine it wouldn't be ridiculously difficult to port it over.

Then why didnt AMD use GDDR5 (or D5X) for Vega if HBM supply is low and expensive? Vega was supposed to compete with Nvidia's cards, but they ended up so expensive and low in production it didnt really make them much money.

Because this is a CPU and gpu on one substrate (sort of) thing. If you used GDDR5/GDDR5x it would a) make the pcb huge and b) consume more power and considering this is somewhat focused on mobile power is a pretty big factor.

AMD has dibs on HBM, Nvidia most likely has dibs on G5X. 

 

Each company is just testing to see what works on the high end solution. HBM is also much neater for mobile solutions. But G5X actually performs
