Dead Edison M 550W - RMA offer EVGA G3 550 or Edison M 650W - which to choose?

Hi. My Fractal Design Edison M 550W PSU got an issue and I sent it for an RMA to the store.

It's been proven faulty, but another Edison M 550W unit isn't available (and would be waited for a longer time) so they offered me two options.

 

   Option 1 - An EVGA G3 550W unit.

   Option 2 - adding additional $10 to get an Edison M 650W unit.

 

On the paper, the EVGA G3 550W looks great. But it comes with only 2 SATA cables, each having 3 SATA connectors.

I have 2 SSD-s mounted to the motherboard tray and the spacing requires a 3-connectors cable to be used (or a 2-connectors cable with one extension).

I have 3 HDD-s mounted in a drive cage at the front of the case. That requires 3 SATA.

The case has an integrated FAN controller powered over SATA. That's about 4 SATA + 3 SATA.

 

I have some SATA power splitters (one SATA power to two SATA power) and I do have some MOLEX to SATA adapters.

I'd like to avoid using adapters, especially the MOLEX to SATA because that would add an additional bulky cable to the insides of the case and complicate cable management a bit.

 

My Edison M 550W came with 2 SATA cables, one had 4 connectors the other 2, but Fractal shipped me another cable with 4 connectors free of charge.

So I had no issues connecting multiple drives, I even had a DVD-RW drive installed too. But I think I can't use the additional Fractal cable with the EVGA unit, the pinouts might not be the same (or I might get lucky and they are).

Also, the Edison has flat cables which look great. The EVGA has regular black (mesh) sleeving.

 

The EVGA G3 550W looks tempting because it's fully modular, the warranty is great (7 years), the reviews are great (it's a Tier 1 PSU) but the cables seem to be a problem for me (lack of SATA connectors, fat sleeved cables).

The Edison M 650W is a tier 2 PSU but I'm used to the looks of the Edison M series, I like the cables and I wouldn't have a problem with the SATA cables but it costs a bit more.

 

My next upgrades wouldn't increase the power draw of the PC, they would lower it, so power-wise both are fine.

 

Which should I choose?

I like Fractal, but their PSUs aren't the best. I've had to RMA a unit for coil whine in the past and got sent back a higher wattage unit with the same issue. Think it also had Tawainese capacitors instead of the better Japanese ones.

 

Go for EVGA, the OEM is better.

The OEM for the Edison M series is Seasonic, it's a Seasonic G unit inside + a Fractal fan instead of a louder one that Seasonic uses.

Edison is a grade above the Integra I had forever ago

 

Still, Super flower is solid and I love the EVGA unit I currently have. The warranty is ridiculous. ?

Super Flower does PSU-s for EVGA? The friend who lent me his CX430 to use while my PSU is in the RMA process has a Super Flower Golden Power PSU he purchased on my recommendation. I know they are good.

EVGA sources their G2 series from Super flower, and their G3 series from seasonic

If that's a Seasonic unit, I might be lucky and the Fractal cable might work.

 

Edit: Now they contacted me, the Edison M 650W is not available, their webpage software was showing wrong.

(It could be the other way around, I can never remember which OEM makes which G series ) I know it's those two though! @STRMfrmXMN

The only EVGA Seasonic units end in "S" like the GS and PS.

Lol, what? That's hardly them extending you a favor. Definitely take the G3.

Depends if you don't mind a noisy PSU or not.

If you can live with a bit noisy PSU, Leadex II is OK.

If you want something quieter, go for something else.

 

THe Leadex 2 650/750W I have is on the louder side. Not something I'd recommend...

There are just so many other options that are better...

Considering that all other PSU-s they can offer me fall either into the lower Tier2 or Tier3 I decided to accept the offer of the EVGA G3 SuperNOVA 550W.
